Kendrick81
Hello all, first post........I'm guessing this question may have been beat to death but I'd like some fresh ideas on my current situation. I have a 99, mods are cool head with 18cc domes(I believe), stage one port(prolly go to a stage two next year), bored .90 over, FMF Gold Series Fatty pipes and I believe power core silencers, blaster reeds, boost bottle,K&N s with outerwears, no box, mikuni 28 mm round slides( they were killing my thumb so I just put on a twisty), with I believe 270 main, not sure on pilot, advanced timing of about 5-7 degrees, call it six because I'm not 100% on that, Teflon coated pistons and not sure by who, I ride half and half trails and dunes and want some sort of bottom end, I run bel ray gearsaver, engine ice, and I mix 1 gallon of vp110 with 4 gallons chevron supreme and use Klotz r50 to make a 40:1 ratio. I have been pretty set on getting mikuni flat side 28mm, however someone has suggest Keihins, I'm still researching them but it appears that they are a bit more expensive, I ll spend the money but I want good value, reliability, and something that a relatively noobie individual can work on himself in terms of jetting. Any constructive comments and concepts of what brand and size of carbs i should do are greatly appreciated. Bob P.S. I will likely go to Toomey T5's when I go to the stage 2 port as well, unless someone wants to talk me out of it...... And i mainly ride in Utah and Nevada from elevation anywhere from 3000' to 6500'.........thanks again to all who help me out.

98_shee
You should look into a single carb for more bottom end. I prefer Keihins over mikuni.
2004LEBanshee
If your set on the 28 mikuni id consider looking into boring out the stockers. The will go to a 28. Id never run a 2 in 1 jmo.
Kendrick81
98 shee- I have thought about that idea, I have decided I d rather be able to open it up when I m in the dunes, and it was built to have 2 carbs and I ll keep it true to how it was intended. Thanks for your suggestion. 2004 LE- I have 28 mm roundslide aftermarket mikuni s currently.

Trick2stroke
You might consider Lectrons also. They seem to be much easier to tune, however, I don't have a whole lot of direct experience with them. I wouldn't go higher than 30-34mm to salvage the low end snap for the trails. I don't know what a stage one or two port entails or whom is responsible for said porting (I would assume trinity) but an aggressive MX port or dune port sounds like what you need. Also would stay away from Toomey's for a ported motor, they work well with stockish engines. You will get varied advice on pipes, some swear if you're duning or trail riding to stick with procircuits, others will say rockets or shearers maintain plenty of low end but still have the over rev for the dunes. In all honesty you're going to be happy with almost any set up you default on and that's why everyone swears by something different. It's pretty hard to find good, truely unbiased, advice based simply on back to back comparisons and experience.

Thanks Trick I ll check them out as well......kinda figured I d stay at 28mm and maybe go up to 30........not sure, still new at this. If I stay away from Toomey can I stick with my FMF? I m not sure on stages, I use a guy in Utah not trinity, from what I can decipher I m thinking stage one is a trail port, stage 2 is a mx and 3 an aggressive dune port, maybe some of the experts can chime in and explain, again I m too new to know much.
