Overdose
Hi guys I'm new on here and have been doing alot of reserch for my future build but my motor is still running strong so it's not time for that yet. I live in Wyoming and ride in an elevation from 5,200-6000 ft. I ran a compression test on the bike today and she came out at 100psi on both sides. So considering my elvation I have been told I am right where i need to be for compression on a stock motor. I would like a little more power just like everyone else on here so i'll cut to the chase. I don't wanna do a full build until my topend is worn out so here is my idea. I was thinking about swapping my head out for a cool head and 18cc domes to try and put some of the compression back into the motor to compensate for my elevation. I figure I will need a new head anyways when i move to a stroker build in the future. Current setup is: 93 Banshee, stock cylinders and crank, pro design intake with uni arir filter and outerwear, T5's, Boysen reeds, What would be the best dome size to stay on pump gas for my elevation? Is one brand of cool head better than the others? Would this be enough to fry my unwelded stock crank or to much for a stock clutch? Thanks guys! locogato11283
Welcome to BansheeHQ We have two site sponsors that sell heads and domes for power increases, Chariot Performance and NOSS Machine. I would contact them both and get their recommendations as well as pricing. Their names on BansheeHQ are Chariot Performance and dlnoss respectively. Finch
I am close you your elevation and put in 19cc domes and bumped me from 100 to 130 and did help quite a bit with power. first mod i did along with timing. and with your crank thats up to you. most will recommend it when you get up there in mods and compression. ticktock
Welcome to BHQ! While I have little input on this, I would like to say listen to the guys here. Many are very savy when it comes to things. I would suggest contacting a site sponsor for a cool heal and some of your questions. Jeff at Farm and Sand Toys (FAST) is great. He will talk your ear off on the phone to help you out. Give them a call and since he is close shipping will be very fast. If you ask me, and I am no expert, I would recommend not letting your top end "wear out" instead invest in a little port job from any site sponsor. Lots will swear by HJR, FAST and I think that there is another sponsor that folks will rave about. Basically anyone that is on BHQ as a sponsor is top notch and will help any way possible. Overdose
thanks guys for all the great info. I have spoken to Andy at M&M a couple of times about my future build and was also planning on talking to Kevin at HJR to decide on who is the best fit for me. I am just running off the old golden rule if it's not broke don't fix it lol. My future build is leaning towards a 4mil crank so I dont want to have any port work done until I switch cranks. I was thinking 18cc domes might do the trick and I feel like i'm kinda rolling the dice with the crank but oh well lol. I have given a little thought also to getting a timing plate so great advice there +2 degrees would probably wake it up a bit more and be an inexspensive mod. Keep the good advice coming! blowit
You are on the right track by considering raising the compression ratio for your elevation. I would also add that as the air density decreases due to your elevation, Intake modifications really become paramount for decent power. You just cannot get enough air in the engine. Intake porting, high flow reeds, carbs, or even our intake kit will all help you considerably without sacrificing anything on engine life. Overdose
Thanks Brandon, I like your filter kit that looks nice I'd like to get rid of my stock air box. It would be neat to see some pics of that setup on a bike just so I could see how it lays out in the frame. I am thinking I will be ordering a cool head with 18cc domes for sure. How much will this effect my jetting if any you think? either way I'll be checking it has always lol.
blowit
You usually do not need to rejet for compression changes but the compression does affect timing due to burn rates changes. At your elevation, you will be safe running 18cc domes and a little timing. We do not have any pics of the intake system installed unfortunately. I will have to see about mocking some up on a bike since we have had others interested in that.
