Duning a duneable override

Does anyone actually dune with they're duneable override?

I was thinking of trying one out in my dune bike. Or should I just stick with these stock moded trannys? I was gunna try it in either my 4mil twister or 392 cub. Ive ran standard 2-5 overrides in my drag bike so I understand them, but these "duneables" got me confused.

Thanks,

James.

James, I've got a buddy up here who had a 1-5 N-down duneable and he rode it in the dunes. It lasted about 5 trips and he compltely broke a shift fork and jacked up some gears pretty good. He rode it like he would ride a normal transmission in the dunes. If you are aggressive out on the dunes I would stick with a stock modded transmission.

I have these stock modded ones!! and I've duned the hell out of my 10 cub with it. I was going to try a dune able out this year but now you have me worried. Let me know if you need a stock modded one...

He already has a stock modded trans that I built in his 4mil twister.

I went from a "Pro Mod" stock modded tranny to a duneable override. I got the N- down 2-5. It's great if your looking to MOSTLY drag. But I don't care for it as a DUNE tranny. You really can't backload them at all. (I'm told the springs will help prevent the gears from jumping around and getting chewed up, but you can still bend or break shift forks if you backload it.)

So every time I lift off the gas.....I gotta pull in that clutch. Then if you want to get back into the gas....you gotta rev it above the wheel speed before you let it out.

I'm sticking with the override as the bike is almost 500cc and the frame is +4 with a +10 arm. The plan is go make it a dune dragger.

But for my stock framed +6 armed 65HP bike....I'll stick with the Pro Mod stock style tranny.

I'm sure others use a duneable to dune....but I don't care for it. :shrugani:

if you cannot dune a duneable why is it called a duneable. should it be called a might not break as bad trans?? what a joke..

properly done stock modified is an excellent transmission. that being said i have dune rode std overrides in the past with out issues. BUT it wasnt as much fun as a "rider bike" with std trans. never had to think about what i was doing or what gear i was in or what to do if i killed the bike or fell off of it in 4th gear and it died and backloaded all the way down a hill....

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been beating on Redling Racing 2-4 duneables since 2005 and never had a problem. I currently have them in two 18DM's and one 10DM. If anyone has ever seen my hillclimb videos, I beat on them up hill and coming down. I've jammed them down into first sitting on the hill and I've accidentally shifted them up and down. I ride them in the dunes and shift up and down with or without the clutch.

I have a WCR extreme override N 1-4 5&6 I beat the shit out of it also and hasnt given me one single problem- I hill climb, trail ride, drag race, dune occasionally..

I have shifted up and down without the clutch etc, they can take a lot of abuse.

To answer your question, yes it possible and a lot of people do it, me personally I would take a stock modified tranny over it any day of the week for duning..

I just think there a lot more work involved, great for drag racing but for my style it just isn't the best route to take.. So much more clutching involved, not being able to REALLY backload etc This is just my opinion, i believe there are better options out there.

My bike is going back to a stock tranny real soon

I say, have someone on here modify a stocker for you, you'll be glad you did so

Joe
