Adding a 4 stroke to the garage, Which one to BUY ?

Recommended Posts

Very well put "bbcmudtruck" the new YFZ450r's are sweet machine and they look like they can be one hell of a bike. What exactly is needed to get more power from them ??? Fuel re-mapping, bigger injector ????

I'm not going to get into a pissing match with ya. Simple statement, you don't see any pro riders still rockin the older bikes. Your not going to change my opinion. And yes, I think the r with factory suspension is just as good as a set of aftermarket shocks on the older bikes, IF dialed in correctly. Why, because I personaly have seat time on both. Besides, you can buy an r that has a decent amount of upgrades for less than 5 and have twice the bike. I'm not saying the older yfzs are junk by any means. Just saying that the R's are much, much better. That's my opinion, and your not going to make any arguable point to sway me different. The only draw back on the R's is obtaining power. It costs a little more than a carbed bike. They are superior in every other way. If your patient enough, you can find a low hour r for around 3500. For example, there was a very clean low hour R on the kansas city craigslist for 3500 just a month ago. To me, it makes more sense to buy the best and then invest your money into it from that point forward.

As far as Runs bike goes, I think he was asking waaaay to much for it. He bought it built for 6 or less, added a few bolt ons and then tried to flip it. The guy that built that bike probably did have 8 or more in it, but like anything in this sport, we all know it doesn't mean that's what its worth plus runs bike was still on factory X suspension, not R.

To get a decent amount of power out of the R, your looking at a pretty hefty price tag. Somewhere in the vicinity of 3000 bucks. However, that's starting from scratch, and ending up with a 55-60hp bike. A 60 horse 4 stroke has some balls. You can't compare the power between them and a banshee, because you you can get a 4mil serval that will stomp the shit out of a 60 horse thumper. But I'm assuming that you want a good trail/mx type bike. I dynoed my bike this year at the ls trip and it made 44 hp with a dasa pipe, fci intake and MSD programmer. I haven't sent my motor out for port work yet, but I'm having the head ported, bigger valves put in and the throttle body bored out along with a big bore cylinder and high comp piston. This combo is proven to provide 60 horse. I don't have the time or know how to assemble the engine, so I'm having the builder do it all in house for an additional 200 bucks. To me, that's cheap insrance in knowing that everything was put together correctly. Plus I'm to the point in life where I just don't want to work on shit, so I just pay the builder to do it for me.

I was only considering the 2011 DS450 XMX b/c I dont know anyone that owns one and they are fully setup with long travel front suspension, fuel injection, KYB dual rate shocks, beadlock wheels, anti-vibe +1 steering stem, Rear Extendable Axle from stock to +4, inverted front brakes, fully bolted up frame(no welds).

How is it plus one if it's stock??

It seems like bikes are more expensive here in NJ/NY, i see a lot of 04-05 YFZ going for around $3k and the nicer 08-up are going for close to $6k.

I haven't seen a sicker YFZ450r that bbc's! That mofo is flat out gangster! I have also personally seen the EFI YFZ's go for less than $4,000 in the KC area. You can find the 2008 and older for less than $3,000. I guess it just depends on what you wanna spend.

If I was gonna buy an older bike I think I'd go with the LTR over a YFZ. My buddy is still ridin an '04 and I hate that thing. Just as fast as my LTR but the supension sucks ass. Stupid 2x4 of a seat has crushed my nuts more than once goin through the woops. This Suzuki jusst cruizes through the same stuff. FI is nice for a trail bike too.

If your gonna spend the money for EFI 450.. buy a Raptor .. forget the 450's

I have owned every 450 minus the ktm. They are all pretty comparable and good in their own way. I have a ds 450 right now and its an awesome machine. I'm not gonna say its so much better than the others but its very light and nimble and fun to ride. I had a Suzuki for a couple years to and it was an awesome bike to with lots of power. I just like that not many people in the Oregon dunes have ds 450.
