My03banshee
Sorry I know this sounds like a retarded question but is the water pump impeller supposed to turn if you turn the motor over if you push down on the kick start? Mine doesnt....I just bought it from a friend and its been sitting and has maybe an hr or a few on the motor.... so I'm finding all the problems and fixing them first but I don't see why it wouldnt be hooked directly to the crank via gear driven or something....If so what would make it not turn with the crank? Broken gear or something? Thanks
fastbanshee8
Yes. The water pump is supposed to turn, when the motor is turned over. Sounds like you have a broken gear.

Damn, figured that....Sure glad I got a gasket kit for it and noticed it before it overheated and messed something up. I see someone replaced the stock piece with a nice metal impeller but I guess something made the gear break....time to pop off the case and hope nothing is too messed up
rocky_mtn_yamaha
Im thinking this is the reason my recently purchased shee was blown up, the impeller has a few knicks in it and I was not able to turn it by hand until I got the whole cover that its housed in removed. Good luck brother, sorry to hear about the demise of your bike.

If you go into the technical info section, go into the bottom end walkthrough. Towards the end of the thread you will see exactly how the gears go together and what what everything looks like. Good luck.
SAVAGE420
It's the plastic gear that probably stripped. Simple $5 fix. Check the bearing where the impeller shaft rides for play and rust and what not aswell. Replace the bearing and seal the same time if needed. Cheap as well. Just a tip. When your done that get some grease in your fingers and lightly rub it all over the clutch cover and water pump gaskets. This will make it so they won't stick or rip when you take them off next time, + will help seal. I'm on the same intake, clutch and water pump gasket going on 4 years still like new never a leak or tear. Come off easy like butter every time and I've taken this motor apart plenty off times during this time. Don't do this to your base or head gasket. Do to water neck oring and the orings in aftermarket heads as well. Repack your kick start seal will grease as well since your clutch cover is off anyways. I blue lock tight the bolts as well. I had started looking on youtube for some vids on how it went together and worked but just looked at that page in the tech info section and it helped Alott. Thanks, I shall be pulling the cover asap. Someone has already been in there to change the impeller so hopefully they replaced all the bearings and seals already so I don't have to
My03banshee
Popped the clutch cover today and as I got the cover an inch apart I heard something drop....the nut that holds the clutch drive and oil pump gears on was what fell down, I would bet someone put it on with an impact cuz half the threads are gone in the nut and obviously not making the water pump spin but luckily the threads on the drive still look good. I got pics but can't post em since I'm on my phone. And good for me it already has a billet impeller and bearings feel tight but there's a buildup of redish (from the atf) chunky glitter material in the lower level of the case....looks like clutch material so I'm goin to pull the plates tomorrow to check em out, any other idea what it could be? Ill try and post pics of it when I get to a computer
