banshee has weak spark

Recommended Posts

im 15 years old and have a 1999 yamaha banshee and its pretty well modded, but really the wireing and coil is stock. it ran fine for a long time, till i broke the throttle cable, it had to sit for about a week till i could get a new one, i put it on and put new spark plugs in it and fired it up and it acted like it was fouling the plugs, so i pulled them, checked my compression which is still fine, i checked the spark and its really weak. the only mod i would have that might have something to do with the spark is an adjustable stator plate, but it hasnt been touched for a while and when i looked to make sure it wasnt the problem it all looked ok. i was hoping someone would have an idea of what might be wrong? i need to fix it asap. thanks,

First I would like to say WELCOME TO THE SITE. X2 on pick up gap make sure there is no rust on pick up gap magnet. Make sure you have good clean ground contacts on the coil, stator plate & chassis where the voltage regulator mounts. Also check the coil & spark plug caps. Hope that helps.

i didnt get a chance to make sure the ground wasnt rusted or any sort. but i did clean the pickup and that changed nothing, the coil is a stock coil and it went from running hard and strong one day to running like crap, i had it at a dirt drag strip to have some fun with friends, i ran it all out and hit 96.5 mph is what the tower said atleast. felt like 200 tho haha. but about 2 days after that it ran like crap. like i said, id expect the coil to be bad because it is an old quad and is rode hard in the woods. is there something i could need to replace? any specific performance brand i should go with?

If you have a buddy with the same year bike or at least close swap the CDI boxes. Most weak spark issues start with a weaking CDI. Also is the TORS still hooked up? If so unplug all four connections (carbs, throttle, and the control unit under the tank opposite the coil)

I got home from school and finally didnt have as much homework so i got a chance to work on my banshee, i got it on the lift and was lookin at the CDI box and seen a ground wire, i disconnected the ground wire to wirebrush it and clean it up, while it wasnt touching a thing, i did a spark check and it had tons of spark while the ground was disconnected, it fired right up like before, and i grabbed my helmet and took it for a quick ripp, came back soon now that it gets dark at 6, and shut it off, and let it cool back down, i went back to start it to make sure it was all ok and it seems to be ok... did i do something wrong? Whats my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So your saying your spark was better with the ground disconnected?
