Kickstart Broke Cover and Case

Something is off with your timing, or way too much compression. It is not common with stock ignition. Are you sure the flywheel hasn't slipped or broke the key and has spun on the crank shaft? The only time they kick back is with a lot of timing advance with some pretty hefty compression. That or you just kicked it like a girl. lol

Ha, nah it got kicked in man mode. Stock compression, keyway and stator. Got us scratchin our heads. We are going to put an adjustable stator on it, but the one we had was just stock and this happened twice.

Does it run at all or have you not got it started yet? Heres a poor mans way of checking the cranks

 

take your plugs out and remove the stator cover. Take a pencil and put it in one of the spark plugs holes and roll the motor over with the flywheel until you find TDC. Then without touching anything put the pencil in the other hole and then slowly roll the flywheel. If the pencil goes down before it goes up the crank is out of phase and will do crazy things when kicking it..

 

With that being said, if you kick it slow does it try and fire with a kick back at weird times?

The thing actually runs great. It has a brand new HotRods crank in it with 0 hrs. It just kicked back 2 times and the second time it actually started in reverse. It kicks back unbelievably hard and almost blew one of my mechanics over the bars and then started in reverse. I 'm a little embarassed, but I didn't even think to question the brand new crank. We will have to check that next.

Ok this may be possible but as crazy as it sounds but it is possible with two stroke engines and it being a reed valve engine it can actullaly be running backwards. Some two stroke engines will run backward for very little time with little load to them. that would be giving the extreme hard kickback and it running in reverse. I have no idea if this right it just somethin i knew that some two stroke can do. If it is doing what i'm saying i have no idea how to fix it.

I would see if you can borrow some electrical stuff from a friend and do some testing. The crank is out of whack or something in the ignition is out of whack. They shouldn't kick back, especially with the stock ignition system. If you had a dyna and some custom curves or an adjustable plate set way too high I'd say maybe, but with stock components, it shouldn't happen. Do like n20 suggested and check your crank, then I'd try a different CDI, Stator, and flywheel.

 

I have a couple adjustable timing plates and stators. I'd make ya a good deal on one of the adjustable ones if you want it.

We took the brand new crank out to double check that it is true. Waiting for that to come back from our machine shop. Looked to be perfect with just a straight edge and it ran great when it ran, but wanna make sure. Putting new stator in the machine with adjustable timing plate. Compression is standard. Just has stock heads with stock pistons. Thinking problem is in ignition.
