bottom end seal question

My motor is leaking oil out of the seal that is behind the front sprocket. If I just let it idle on flat ground no leaks. But when I ride it and get on a decent hill side ways. The oil pours out. I have only rode it long enough to break the motor in, jet it, and take it on one ride. During the break in there was no leaks. During the jetting process it had just a small drip. I thought I fixed that problem by putting in a billit nuetral switch cover. Took it on the first riding trip and on our first stop I noticed oil pouring out the seal.

The motor was built and assembled by a site sponsor.

Can I replace the seal without taking the motor apart? Or do I need to split the cases?

call the site sponsor that you dealt with.....they will know the question. chances are you wont be able to replace the seal. Did you have the sponsor replace all the seals and gaskets while he was in the bottom end? or did you try and save money by cheaping out? (no offense if you did)

if you cheaped out and its a seal that's leaking i dont know that they will take much blame as you told them to not replace the seals.

if you DID get the seals replaced then i bet they will take better care of you than you expected.......our site sponsors on here are absolutely amazing and do top notch work.

The countershaft seal CAN be replaced without splitting the cases. Also, there is a collar that goes on the shaft for the seal to ride on, is it there?

Split the case and do it correctly. If you paid your builder for all new seals I would contact them about at least getting a new seal kit from them. Don't try and smash a new seal into the cases with them together, you'll just end up with another leak down the road. Split them and do it right.

I thought the countershaft seal has lip on it that did not allow it to be placed in while the cases were sealed?

No, only the crankshaft seals have the rib on them. They put the rib on the crank seals to keep the pressure in the bottom end from pushing them out of the case. You can pull the seal out of the case and drive a new one in just like doing the shift shaft or kickstarter seals or a tranny or pinion seal on your car.

That seal does come out and go in without splitting the cases. I would recommend throwing the new seal in the freezer for a few minutes before you install it that way itll shrink a little bit. and be easier to install. Use a little white lithium grease around the edges if you want as well.
