BAMF87
i just bought a 97 banshee about a week ago and havent had time to ride it until today. I dont know very much about them to know if this is normal but there is a loud pinging in the left exhaust at lower rpms. the guys said it had a top end done two seasons ago. it starts up good and hauls a$$ does this sound normal on a two stroke? it only has prodesign filter, fmf gold fattys, +4 timing, and boost bottle. Also Im in Tucson az does anyone know a good atv shop to look at?
90Bansheedude
pinging that I am familiar with would be from too far advanced timing. It is igniting the mixture before it gets over the hump of TDC.
BAMF87
im sorry but i dont know what tdc is, isnt +4 timing what most people run?
90Bansheedude
probably, thats just what I am used to pinging being, but I work with cars more than quads. TDC is top dead center, like it tries to explode the fuel mixture before the rod goes over center, and is making a hard impact on the piston instead of making it rotate. Advanced timing is great, because it helps ignite the mixture right when it needs to to get max hp, but sometimes if its too advanced then it ignites it too soon. Lets see if anyone else more knowledgeable with 2 strokes chimes in.
BAMF87
It sounds like a marble or rock is rattling around in the fattest part of my exhaust but once the power band kicks in it goes away and the bike takes off and hauls balls. I don't hear it around the engine just in the left exhaust
Larry's Shee
I take it that you have never owned a two stroke. Sounds perfectly normal to me. Make sure both air screws are the same. Is there any hesitation when you stab the throttle rolling along? To be on the safe side clean both carbs one at a time as some parts are different. What do your plugs look like? I would highly suggest ditching the boost bottle as it will crack the intake boots causing major engine damage. I was lucky to catch my son's in time, they were starting to crack. 252wheelieking
From my experience of hearing that pinging sound in the fattest part of your header is a sign of detonation. Mines use to sound like that also at idle & I kept riding it. The second sign of detonation was when my spark plug backed out of the head. I installed new plug & tighten it down really good & kept riding it ignoring the signs. Then my engine blew up from detonation. just my experience. Basically I'm saying get it checked out & dont avoid it like I did.
Banshee Roost
Use 91 or 93 whatever you have avalible and mix 32:1 or something like that buy a ratio rite to mix oil in the gas!
BAMF87
I mixed yamalube at 32:1 and this is my first 2stroke. When I'm cruising around the pinging is there alot in the left pipe and very little in the right and when I stab the grottos there is a little hesitation and when the rpms kick in it's gone. I have a clymer manual but didn't find any info on this so I thought I'd ask y'all before taking to a shop. I just moved to Tucson az and am limited on my tools for a while
90Bansheedude
It could be on one side and not the other because the second cylinder has weaker compression, and is not enough to cause detonation. What octane are you using for gas? Too much compression and not enough octane = detonation/combustion/ignition (whatever you want to say) before the spark plug sparks = really bad! I use 93 octane but I haven't got to ride much so I don't know what the other guy ran
BAMF87
Also I bought the quad in phoenix which is at 1100 ft elevation and where I live is 2100-2300 ft above sea level could this be the problem? And if I ditch the boost bottle what do I put in place of it? Edited September 18, 2011 by BAMF87
252wheelieking
yes...do a compression test & leakdown test on your motor. Compression test will let you know what octane fuel to run. Leakdown test will let you know if your engine has any air leaks.

Ive never had any experience with the "boost bottles".
