Coolhand
So, yesterday, I finally get my engine back together after a new crank and pistons. And I got so excited to start it, plus I was drinking, I fired it up with no trans oil in the crank case. It ran sweet until it started making a weird noise and wanting to engage in neutral. The bike only ran for literally 10 seconds before I realized how damn stupid I am and shut her down. Can 10 seconds running in neutral dry fry bearings? #1JUANstunna
I would assume that you cleaned are the tranny parts before putting it back together. Atleast I do with parts cleaner. So yes I'd say you could have fried a bearing. But it is probably just a dry bearing.
Coolhand
I'll try it after work. I've been so worried about it all day, I can barely function. Lol...but I guess I deserve it.
Coolhand
And yes, everything was cleaned in a parts cleaner prior to reassembly. I put oil in the trans, should I let it run for a bit even if its making a little noise to see if it will lube up? Or could I cause more severe damage? #1JUANstunna
I'd fill it with fluid and then lean the bike up on both sides just to let the oil get in everywhere. Then start it and see what flies out of it.
Larry's Shee
Can't spoil a rotten egg. Add the oil, zip tie the clutch lever, spin the trans by the wheels shifting thru the gears several times. Then try it. If it's still making noise then the damage is already done. Good luck, let us know how it goes.
n2otoofast4u
Fill it COMPLETELY full with ATF rock it around to get the air out of it and let it sit for some amount of time and let the oil work into everything. Then drain down to normal level and ride it around for a bit. Then empty and and refill with clean. If its fucked then its fucked no matter what but Id give this a try before you call it junk. Zwiser
if you didnt ride it you should be fine
Michael Jackson
be happy you dont have tranny oil in your crank case, thats a good thing
Coolhand
I filled her up with gear saver and did just about everything you guys said. It started fine and ran for about 10 seconds again...then made the same noise and started trying to engage in neutral. I shut it off right away cause I'm a pussy. But then decided to grow some nuts and just let it idle. I let it run for a couple minutes with the noise and it got a little worse, then completely stopped. Man, I'm so stoked that I'm not a complete fuck up. Thanks everybody for the advice.
camatv
its a good thing your clutch basket bushing is now stuck to your trans shaft!!
LS3 Machine
We had a pilot run a dry helicopter transmission at idle for 30 seconds. It was not damaged (luckily). They cost about 1/4 mil.
