doing it right

Recommended Posts

Ok. im new here, not new to the quad/dirtbikes scene. I have been taking a break from riding and now im getting back into it. I used to own a 93 banshee (impulse buy) I was Just wondering what is the best year for the banshee im looking at getting another and want to do it right. i have been told a 2000 is the best then the people at my local shop say an 04-06 is the best. I figured i would get on here and ask people that actually own them. Money is not a problem i have about 3500 to spend on one. not looking to spend all of it would like a little cushion for upgrades. So with this being said. What is the best year for the banshee.

For $3500 I'd look for one as new and as stock as possible and build it the way you want it. I've always been paranoid of buying a bike that someone else has done work to. You rarely ever trust work done by someone else especially if they are the one selling it, after all they are there to make money off of it so who's to say that they're being truthful about the work or mods done...

yeah i know about the whole J-arm A-arm thing. so i guess i will just try to find something in the 2000's then. dont really need a brake light but i guess it would be nice to have on the trails since thats what i will be using it for.

What is the best exhaust for trail riding? my old banshee had toomey t-3s i think. they where nice but then again my old banshee was a pile.

Depends on what your other mods will be. Most people will probably say Pro Circuit, PT Mids, or FMFs. IMHO they all have their special place and I would think if you're dedicated to riding any kind of rough trails the gearing would play an equal or bigger part than pipes, of course then there's tire size. A whole other can of worms could be opened there.

Well like I said above, what else do you plan on doing with the engine such as porting, carbs, etc.? This is the part where you wanna kinda plan for future mods with the pipes you get IMO. I ride tight, rough, technical trails and my T5s are plenty for me but I also run a 13t front sprocket with 20" tires. I know the T5s are by far not the optimal pipe for my type of riding but I do plan on porting sometime in the future and my pipes are one less thing I'll have to replace when I get that done. I forgot to add Toomey T6s in there as well, I've heard they have loads of bottom end just like the Pro Circuits do. They look nearly identical.

87 88 had J arms, 89 on had A arms, there was a few lil electrical differences but basicly the same. just look for one in good condition. there is more after market A arms out there than J, so look for an A arm.

3500 will get you a modded bike.

I have an 89 that I bought brand new off the dealer's floor and it has J arms as do 2 1990 models that I know of. 1990s came with the new style fromt brakes but still had J arms like the older bikes.

I would go for something in the 97 to 01 models, they will have the lateset version of electrical stuff without having the big ugly brake light. If you want the brake light, then I would go for an 06 in the USA or whatever the latest year is where you are at. That way it will have the least amount of neglect and abuse.

Try craigslist they always have a few for sale in any local area. Pick one you like and go look at it. My opionion is don't buy anything that you can't hear run. Don't let them tell you o it's a new top end and blah blah. Bring a compression tester. O and also do overpay because he says o it's ported and blah blah if they cant show receipts with dates then don't overpay. Only go buy what you see coolhead, pipes, and other goodies. Once you buy one you will be hooked!!!!

Well its official I just landed a new job working at Sauder Woodworking so now it looks like i will be able to get my banshee even faster then i thought. i have decided that im going to try and get an 05 or an 06. as close to stock as possible. i dont want any port work done just maybe get a single carb conversion kit (if it works let me have some feedback on that) new tires and stuff like that just try to make it a good woods bike.

i have heard that they make a +4 timing key those any good?
