Ray J Neal
While the new-to-me shee is down for the next few days waiting for a swingarm extension I decided to investigate a noise that is intermittent, noticed at idle in neutral. Again, it is intermittent. It is loudest at the right side cover, near the kick start. It sounds like a rattle, ratcheting type of noise, and gets somewhat. It comes and goes. It is only there at idle. Maybe it is normal? Don't know, but I thought I should investigate it while it is apart anyway. If you change the video to 1080p it helps with the clarity a bit. I imagine a bit of RTV around the o-ring for the water pipe would be a good idea on reassembly?
94Mike
Are you sure it is not the kickstarter?
06specialedition
Just throwing this out there, but I don't think the idler gear should have that kind of play. I would throw a new idler gear bushing in there and see if it goes away. I'm no expert though, just giving a suggestion. Its a cheap fix, a new bushing and clip are like a few bucks. Ray J Neal
It is not the kick start arm rattling. I should have added this in the original post, and I will edit it now for clarity. The bought this banshee from a guy who just had a new crank, head, piston set, etc just installed at a Yamaha dealer not even two months ago. SO, this would have all been apart when they did the work. EDIT: Wheres the best place for these parts? FAST Racing? I need steel bushing, front and rear washer..might as well get circlip as well. That's it? Edited September 1, 2011 by Ray J Neal

Phelps
the basket bushings are def wiped out. shouldn't be any play from the basket to the gear. doubt that's causing a "rattle" but fix that as well.

You need a new clutch basket. Best time to upgrade to a billit basket.

I'm gonna step out on a limb here and say that the basket is what is rattling. Seems like it would make the clutch plates rattle as well. My idler gear had more play than that and it doesn't rattle in the least. Best bet is, like these guys said, find someone letting go of a billet basket for cheap and buy some new bushings for it. Presto, a practically new and ready to ride piece. Would've really helped to be able to hear it before tear down though.
Ray J Neal
Stock clutch basket bushings can't be replaced correct? And the billet will have replaceable bushings?
bansheesandrider
I imagine a bit of RTV around the o-ring for the water pipe would be a good idea on reassembly? DON'T RTV the O ring, it will make it hard to get the cover off and if you ever have to pull the cover away from home you won't be able to reuse the O ring. Just give it a good coat of grease and you will be good to go. Edited September 1, 2011 by bansheesandrider
Ray J Neal
The o-ring looks fine, but I'll go match it up at the hardware store. It wouldn't be good to have coolant enter the gearbox ATF!
bigblockbanshee
Stock clutch basket bushings can't be replaced correct? And the billet will have replaceable bushings? The stock basket bushings can be replaced but you have to get really creative with how you're going to re-attach the plate/gear to the basket itself. It can be done and there is a write-up about it but for the effort you'll put into it there may be a bit more logic in just replacing the whole thing for a billet piece as stated.
