Do cool heads really make a difference?

Recommended Posts

I have an 06 Banshee with pro circuit pipes, vforce 3 reeds, open air box with K&N filter, only about 15 hours on the bike at 600 feet. My question is whats next? Cool head with domes or a timing plate? Which one would I get more power from? What size domes would I want to get? I want to stay on 93 octane. Any suggestions would be appreicated!!!

Thank you!!

If money is an issue you can have your stock head milled for pretty cheap. I run a Chariot cool head and LOVE it. At your elevation on pump gas 21cc domes would be about max IMO. Anything above about 160-170 psi needs higher octane I believe.

A timing plate is only like 35 bucks, so why not just get a cool head and a timing plate?

If u advance ur timing more than 4 degrees or run 20 sizes domes or smaller then higher octane gas would be required.

Also dont add to much comp if u have a stock crank either.

I have a prodesign cool head with 22 domes and it puts me 10psi higher than stock for my elevation. I already have a pwr rad and high flow impeller, so this only helped 5 degrees or so. I think the "cool" part of the coolhead is just that it is cool to be able to adjust your comp, not majorly cool your engine.

Once again I will defend the claim that our Heads are made from the same material that Alien Spacecrafts are mad of!! No kidding and it is an alloy which is mixed with Gold and Diamond Dust and sometimes the hair of Unicorns!!

Thats why I run a Chariot head. Can't buy that material anywhere else ;)

do the timing plate first, +4 is a generall all-around good setting. if you are a tad bit more experienced in mods, i would suggest playing with it, which could be dangerous in virgin hands. at your elevation, and given you can run 93, i would not hesitate to run 20cc, as long as you don't run it lean and no old ass fuel. if you cannot promise that to yourself, 21 is safer.... btw, "old ass= 1minth+ in contact with air (the gascap vent tube counts as air)

21cc is safe and allows room for timing adjustments.. 20cc is a gamble without knowing the setup. By setup.. i mean base gaskets, jetting, quality of fuel and Dome design. Not all 20cc domes are the same.. some are more prone to deto then others. I ride around 600ft elevation. I typically use 21cc domes and a plate on setups that dont want a 50/50 mix of fuel.

belive it or not, i run my "hemi head" 20cc domes on 90oct, at stock timing with absolutely no issues on stoc timing, 90 oct! and bumped it to 95, for ease of mix with 100ll. i beliv e that i could run them on my +5 timing, but would not dream of advising it, i know i am at the ragged edge of the fuel going with the availible 90, and risking it, even at 54.5 bore. that does bring up a point..... while the small range of stocke bore options (54-56.5mm) does not make much power as 4 stroke sites seem to claim, ti does play a bigger role on compression ratio, which will deide what domes are safe, ad what wil get you your desired power bump. most cases, it is a toss-up between 21 and 22cc domes, and you are right at the cusp. imo, take it or leave it, 20cc is fine, as long as you can recognize wht lean sounds and feels like. if you are thinking about it and don't know, best to go strait to the safe 21's. if you have the experience to know exactly what the slightest bit lean presents, then you can effectively gain a little more, but not much.... not enough to gamble on.

p.s. i know it is possible to run stock stroke/bore/port on 19cc in a controlled env. on 93, so 20, is not that far off from the extreeme limits, but closer to safe. i just hate to see losing out on power in higher elevations. take or leave my buzzed advise, lol
