dirt in carbs

Recommended Posts

It seems everytime I go out riding and go through water in a trail or in dusty conditions I just cannot keep dirt from getting into the carbs. Its really annoying anymore because after an hour of riding ill have a quad that loses 1/3 of its power and also tends to run hot. I have done to the air system:

last two inches of box cut off

previous owner cut a bunch of holes all over and put the foam filters in them

foam air filter without an outer wear(i need to get one to see if it helps)

and i assemble the air box and then install it into the bike so that the weatherstripping at my air filter is perfectly placed so it doesn't leak there.

the carbs have new hoses so they are well sealed them selves.

does the holes in the box cause a lot of problems like this?

Also should i get rid of the foam air filter? i dunno if it will have enough air with a stock filter though as it is bored out and everything....

How does the airfilter connect to the airbox? Is it a stock style that only stays in place by the lid or is it a pro-design adapter plate setup? Here is a pic of what that looks like with the adapter plate...

If you don't have the adapter plate, I would highly suggest you get one, because the factory setup is well known to let dirt get past it at the seal which will eventually burn up the topend. I don't really need my airbox, adapter plate or air filter so if you need it let me know.

Yes it is the stock style with the lid holding the filter in place. but i have a 1/2in of weatherstripping between the front of the box and filter. And i assemble the airbox with it off the bike so i can make sure the stripping is in the right place when i put the lid on..... i dont think it leaks there but it could.

How much do you want for the box and filter? what setup did you switch to?

hmm ive never checked the caps. I will since i am taking it apart this weekend to clean carbs and everything. but it seems like i notice having problems as soon as i go through dirty water in the woods trails everytime, it doesn't die or sputter but i can tell that the power i had is not there....
