Trans upgrade time

Recommended Posts

So my transmission brought me to a grinding/clunking/skidding stop friday night while ripping up a field. I havent pulled it out yet, but i can see the rear shif fork shaft has pushed itself out the shifter side of the motor, so i am assuming (almost hoping) that the damage will require replacement (upgrade).

My questions are, is a duneable override the right trans for my riding, who cuts the best one, where can i buy it, does it have to be paired with lockup, does one style lockup work better with duneables? I know a few months back people were having major problems engaging multiple gears at once and shit like that, is that all cleared up?

Its a 4mm long rod, 18cc domes, race gas motor and 80% of my riding is as Silverlake sand dunes dune riding with alot of drag racing, 10% wide open UP hauling ass trails/fields, 5% tighter woods/tight flat track, 5% putzing my lazy ass around the yard to the lake.

I'd get a duneable. I use WCR for my transmissions.

C'mon Shayne, ask a whole bunch of questions and you give me just 10 words? Share your knowledge brotha! Ive come to see that WCR is the trans of choice for alot of people on BHQ.

I guess the real mystery for me is how does the lockup affect the trans? Is it necessary? would it be stupid to run the override without a lockup, or would i not benefit from the lockup enough to make a difference?

Heres the deal.. the trans becomes impossible to shift if its slipping.. even with a overide it wont want to shift... when the clutch slips it binds the trans.. the lock ups cure that problem. If you dont want a lock up I'm sure you can get by with springs alone. a lock up probably isn't needed.. but.. on the same hand. You might need some pretty stiff springs.. if you dont want the hard pull.. go with a lock up and use lower tension springs.

on my stock cylinder bike I wont be using a lock up with the overide.. I'm going to try 6 extra HD springs to start.. if it slips which I dont beleive it will.. I'm going to a 8 plate setup. I'm sure that will hold it.

So it pretty much boils down to if it slips.. do you mind a heavy clutch pull over spending the extra coin on the extra parts of a lock up?

We were holding a 10mil cub with 6 HD springs on a 7 plate setup.

Was this a lil more informative for ya Bob? yelrotflmao.gif

Im a lazy bastard so Id prefer to use light weight springs so the clutch pull is easy and then run a lockup. There are other advatages to the lock up as well. Good luck with WCR some have good luck with them, some would like to choke them out. Id use Cameron at Redline Racing for your dunable, his work great, fast turn around times, and hes a site sponsor. Support those who support the sport!
