WHITE PAR
What's up. I just picked up a 98 'shee. I'm really in love with the thing, it might be my favorite fourwheeler. It's pretty clean and it runs reallly good. I raced my friends 06 450r and once I got the shifts down we are dead even all the way up to top speed, neither of us will pull on the other. The known mods on it are Toomey t5's and a k&n air filter, and I"m sure it's prolly jetted too. The only thing I'm concerned about so far is when I was riding yesterday it sounded like it was pinging some at low rpms. I'm running cheap mineral oil from Kawasaki (I know) at 32:1. Does anybody think that if I got some caster927 and mixed it at 36:1 if it would richen me up some to prevent that pinging. Also what is another simple bolt on that I could get to edge out that fo-fiddy. I was thinking of trying to find some biggere carbs but I don't know what size would be a good upgrade from stock. Also are the T5's a good exhaust? I really like the look of chrome fmf fatties with the fmf mufflers.
BUILDER
Welcome to the HQ!! T5 pipes are a good all around pipe but it really depends on what kind of riding you are doing. Fattys are more of a trail pipe and you will probably loose a little topend with them if you switch. If the motor is pretty much stock switching carbs is not going to be the best way to spend money. Get yourself a adjustable timing plate and moving your timing to +4 buy a cool head and get domes so you can up your compression just a bit and put dual K&N filters on it if they are not there already and you should have no trouble beating your buddy. Also if you switch filters you will need to rejet the bike should not leave that out. As far as your oil goes lots of guys on here run the 927 but most of them are running 40:1 that is pretty safe you should not hurt anything running that. WHITE PAR
Well, I want top end, I don't even want to kid myself trying to give this thing low end, I want it to scream. I think it's going to be a back road warrior for the most part. I thought about the timing plate idea. It has the stock airbox and it even still has the lid but with some holes in it. Maybe just some pod filters, cool head and timing plate would do the trick. I think my first mod is going to be some yfz450 shocks. I thought fatties were for top end and the sst were for bottom? BUILDER
I am not a FMF expert other guys will be able to tell you more but if you want topend them go with CPI, shearers, Rockets or a pipe like that.
zach15
If u want op end get a set of shearers or cpi's, Id do the dual k&n filters timing plate have ur stock head milled(i personaly don't think the cool heads are worth it) then have HJR or another site sponsor or it then get the shearers or cpi's because you will be gaining power with all of those mods and if u just throw the pipes on there and you exhaust port is not at the right hieght it would most like make it run worse than the t5's
BrockMoto
Fatties are pretty all around.. but not near the ceiling you get with CPIs Shearers or Rockets... the SSTs are terrific too but the biggest low end boost from FMF comes from the Gnarly's... but x2 on Kevin at HJR... do some research and pick a pipe then send you motor to him and he will make you a happy man!! camatv
cool head with the right domes, if your airbox has a billet plate in it for the filter you can cut it all out and then rejet. +4 timing on the stock plate, lightened flywheel and ditch the crossover tube, use block off's then look into reeds and getting it ported, then you will need to concentrate on teh bottom end and the clutch.. work with the pipes you ahve now. and then after a while you can go with some cpi's, shear's rockets, or snipers etc.. the sst FMF has more top end overrev with a lil softer hit ont eh mid transition. the fattys have a decent overrev but the sst's will just go a lil farther.. the above pipes will make a LOT on top but without some other mods wont perform as best as they could
WHITE PAR
What's the deal with the crank welds? I've never heard of this before.

Gnarlys are for bottom end, Fattys are for all around riding and the powerband is very similar to T5s just at a little less RPMs, and the SSTs are their top end pipe. Banshees have a problem with the crank- it is just assembled with a press fit and over time the start spreading apart and eventually you will have a failure that will send shrapnel theoughout your motor causing extensive damamge. The more mods and/or power you have the quicker it will happen, but my brand new 89 model did it with nothing more than pipes on it after 1.25 years from when I bought it brand new. Therefore it is the first thing I do whenever I add another Banshee to the stable.
WHITE PAR
Dang, now I'm going to be worried about my crank grenading. I'm not splitting the cases on this thing right now. It's a 98 and it's probably been beat on for almost 15 years now, hopefully if it hasn't came apart by now it's not going to. I think I'll just hang on to the T5's for a while and maybe paint them or something.
dcalsv02
I would not up your compression if you are worried about your crank. pipes, filters, jetting, and timing plate and you will be good.

The dude I got it from said it has been bored, he then went on to say that it has cam work too lol. I don't know what is in it now as far as pistons. You wouldn't recommend shaving the head? You should ask that guy if he has recipts for the cam work. lol, Shaving the head will increase your compression, which will put more stress on the crank. More stress on the crank could cause it to fail faster. shaving the head is good to do, when the surrounding parts involved are able to handle the increased load. WHITE PAR
I didn't even try to explain to him that it has two cams and not just one because I didn't want to ruin the deal.
