Won't shift below 4th

Sorry if this is already on here somewhere, I have searched but can't find any other info. Ok here is the issue I am having. A week ago while racing at the dunes my tranny got stuck in the upper 3 gears, would not go below 4th. When I got home I researched on here and came to the conclusion that it was my shift shaft and related parts. So I tore into it and found that they all had a great amount of wear so I replaced all three related parts, shaft, spring and screw. Got it back together and headed down the driveway got into 5th then started to down shift and same damn thing, will not go below 4th. Any other ideas? Could I have a bent shifting fork?

Welcome to BansheeHQ! First off, sorry about your problem..

Second off, I think you're kind of SOL.. If you replaced the shift shaft, checked the clearance on both sides, and it checked out.. then I don't know what to tell you. Did ur star seem to be working fine? Also, the shift shaft has an extremely small clearance on the star where it contacts top/bot. Double check it. Hard to explain without showing you, but without pullin the motor, I can't think of anything else. Time to split the cases I think!

Explain to us what it's doing. Is the shifter not moving down at all? did anything seem out of place? etc.

Did you adjust the shift shaft eccentric when you put it together? It either has to be that or a bent shift fork, but I would think if it was a shift fork you would not have been able to get it beloww 4 when you were working on it either.

Yeah, I did adjust the eccentric, made sure there was the same distance on top and bottom. Do the shifting forks really bend that easy? Recommend replacing all 3 or just the one? Assuming its the one that moves the 3rd and 4th pinion, if I am looking at the diagram correctly.

After it was back toghter it was in neutral to start with, up shifted through the gears until I hit 5th then started down shifting. Once im in 4 going into 3rd it stops, kinda stuck in between 3rd and 4th, (fake neutral, not in either gear). Everything else inside looked normal except the parts I replaced.

The shift forks will look cooked on the tips if they are bad.

Best thing I can tell you is to have a friend turn the input while you shift the trans in the bottom half of the case on the bench and see what is going on.

I will tear back into it tomorrow after work, take a look behind the clutch basket just in case I missed something before I split the cases. I will keep you posted on what I find.

I adjusted my screw with the engine in neutral also & currently having the same exact problem you are having now. I also miss 2nd gear alot when I rev my motor high & try to shift to 2nd fast. I did some research & found that I should adjust the screw with it in 1st-2nd or any gear except neutral. I have not had time to try it yet but I hope it work. I will let you know what the outcome on mines turn out to be.

Take a close look at the pins the claw hooks into on drum, also look at the claw closely

You called it! Looks like the fork on the right side of the rear guide bar was the problem. the pin and drum had too much wear and was sticking (almost grinding) as is tried to snake through a turn in the drum. In the upper gears that pin is in the straight part of the groove, as you shift down into 3rd it hits a turn and that's where mine was binding up. I had a spare used tranny that I bought last year as a backup, I put those forks and drum in and spun the gears by hand and all seems to be good, can't quite spin them as fast as they do when motor is turning them but not having any problem shifting into all gears! Thanks for your help.
