New to banshees, might have just blown up my motor

Recommended Posts

ok, so im coming from the darkside, as this is my first 2 stroke quad. i traded a nice polaris predator 500 for this banshee which is supposed to have a 421 kit in it. i believe the guy said it had 68mm pistons, and a +4 crank. either way, that doesnt matter. what matters is, i was riding today, sliding around turns in first and second gear, never really built up too much speed. long story short, it overheated. i didn't realize it was overheating until it was too late. the motor died, and wouldnt start back up. also through out a big bit of steam/smoke. it was windy and hard to tell the difference. so im pretty sure a piston or pistons seized into the cylinder. i have never tore down a motor on a quad before, so im wondering what i should be looking for. also, am i looking at a complete new top end or just rings or??? like i said, i have never blown anything up before so i have never had to know what to look for. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanx.

and if you have to do a top end, its a breeze, the biggest paint in the ass about doing it is pulling the motor out, the rest is hard to fuck up lol

You dont need to pull the motor to do a top end.

Check compression, plugs might of of just fouled out.. If you have to do top end like the guys said its pretty simple.

Before tearing into it, why not check simple things first? Obviously you can rule out a seized motor if it still turns over. Any metallic clanking sounds when you rotate it? A compression test will tell you a lot. Why did it overheat? Was it jetted lean? Low on fluid? Air leak? There are a million questions that can be eliminated before you even make it inside the motor.

Our engines can be rebuilt for a third of the cost (and mechanical ability) in comparision to a new-tech 4 stroke. Get back to us with results of your compression test. Let us know how your plugs look. And I am curious what carbs/jets are installed and if it passes a leakdown test. (it overheated, this problem should be addressed)

i think it might have blown a headgasket, and thats why it overheated. im not positve, but will definately do a compression test. idk what size jets are in it, but i will check them out when i get time to work on it which should b thursday. i don't know what a leak down test is. and it still turns over, but it is definately more of a struggle to kick it. ill post more when i actually get into it, but i will do a compression test before i tear into it.

If it's more of a struggle to kick it over I wouldn't do a comp test. Might do more dammage banghead . What do plugs look like? Somewhere there is a sticky on making/useing leak-down tester, highly suggest doing test before tearing it down.

There is an oring in there u could have blown and let in all ur tranny oil in ther that's what ahppened to me

When this happened to yours was the tranny oil under extreme presure when you took out dip stick/ drain plug? Mine builds up so much pressure can hardly unscrew eather one and now it is running hot just wondering if yours had some of the same problems?

ok, finally got into it, the passenger side cylinder has some decent gouges in it, the tranny fluid is milky and the headgasket looks junk. pistons look fine, drivers side cylinder looks fine, i think im going to need a new headgasket and new cylinders...anybody wanna buy some parts lol

how deep are the gouges? they can (should) be able to be bored out and honed by a service shop/dealer. OR GO TO A SITE SPONSOR!!! they live for banshee's and will help you with whatever you need.....plus usually they can get it done for cheaper than any service shops.

the head-gaskets (unless they are the oring style for coolheads) are one time use gaskets. i know some use them more than once.....and sometimes you can.....but your lucky if it seals. once you go through a heat cycle with a head gasket.....you should toss it and put in a new one.
