timing help?

Recommended Posts

on my banshee, i just rebuilt it over the winter. i took it out with friends on probabily a 6 or 8 hour ride and it was fine all day, i was on trails all day and wasnt that hard on it. but heading home it burnt a hole in the left piston. i changed the crank seals and all. im running stock carbs, pro circuit pipes, drilled air box, v force reeds, bored .020 ovr, pro-lite pistons, trinity stage VII cool head, 20cc domes, B8ES spark plug. and im wondering is +6 timing is too much for it? any help?:confused:

After your rebuild did you do a leak down test? You may have an air leak causing a lean condition on your left side.

I run +5 on pump gas with no issues. IMO, you don't need +6 with those mods. 4 or 5 would be plenty.

I 2nd that....+6 is a bit too much, imo.......a lot of guys dont run more than +4. Maybe +5.......i nm myself I run +4.....better safe then sorry ya know

but will it perform any different? meaning will it run better or no?

Well I can only speak for myself ya know but like the other guy said, if you dont have the mod that require it then dont.

Its kinda like the kids these day that think running race fuel in there stock engines , on or off road, makes them a lot faster.....if you understand where comming from

i get exactly what your sayin, it was my dads 4 wheeler but hes a little to old to be riding it so he gave it to me after 4 years of just sitting at his house and he said that he rode it 1 full year with the timing that advanced. so when i burnt up the piston, i figured it would have been a chance of both the crank seals and the timing that caused it and i wanted to get some opinions on the timing so i dont have to throw 300$ into a new top end. me and my wife trail ride alot and i really dont wanna get far away from the house and burn it up again. that was my only problem.

also i burnt the electrode off the spark plug, which is from predetination- meaning it could be an air leak or the timing. so i ajusted both. hopefully it was just the air leak. strange thing is it ran great all day until i crossed a creek. after tht it burnt up. would some watter on the crank seal on the fly wheel side ruin the seal?

Well logically speaking and not seeing it in frony of me, Id say your problem is in the top end. You only have the issue with one cylinder. On the seal question water wont hurt it. Thats its job to keep stuff out. Only time that seal is gonna die is if it got cooked or messed with. Theyre pretty durrable cause if they werent everyone would have to maintain them like the top ends ya know

well what would it be in the topend? the coolhead would leak anti-freeze. and i always put brand new seals and gaskets on everytime. banghead

Top end: anything above the crankcase. Yes this includes your carbs.

That being said id suggest you look at everything to make sure its all set right instead of potentially messing the engine up more by running it

my carbs were set up perfect tho. the plug was a nice crisp brown. what would it be in the carbs?
