252wheelieking Posted April 4, 2011 Report Share Posted April 4, 2011 What up BHQ fam? I have a problem but wanted some opinions on what could have cause this to happen. My sprocket & brake hub have a little play in them (back & forth) before turning at the same time my axle turn & the locknut have a little play (back & forth) but doesn't fully turn. Im thinking the splines could be worn a little from the way the hubs move. (hope not). When I first install the hubs on the axle everything was tight. When the axle turn the sprocket & brake hub turned at the same exact time (no play at all). Now im hoping I just need to re-torque my locknut & everything is safe. If I roll my shee backwards & put it in 1st gear the sprocket hub shifts forward a little then locks so it can then turn my axle. BHQ fam help me out...this shee is going to stress me the FUCK OUT....it always need something. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Do you have any other hubs you could try or have any friends who have hubs you could try and swap out and see if it still does it. If you swap hubs and the problem goes away, then its the hub splines. If the problem persists, then its probably the axle splines. I've heard of people cleaning the splines and putting epoxy on the splines before putting the hubs on and it tends to lock the hubs in place. It didn't do that with my stock axle. So it's a big chance that it might be the splines on my axle cause the sprocket hub & brake hub is doing the same thing. I hope so cause it was fine when the bolt was tight now it's kind of loose & im having this little play back & forth. Another thing, I was researching & I found that if I don't use the G-Force axle wrench made for the 3 piece bolt that it will work it way loose, if not torqued properly. I use a pair of big channel lock pliers & didn't torque it to spec. could that be the reason the sprocket hub is moving back & forth, (not left to right)? when I slid the sprocket hub on before the 3 piece bolt was install it fit tight in the splindes. bansheesandrider Posted April 5, 2011 Report Share Posted April 5, 2011 I have found that when you have this condition, you need to replace the axle AND the hubs as the splines in all the parts are actually wore. If you replace just the axle or just the hubs you are installing worn parts against new parts which causes premature wear on the new part. jbooker82 Posted April 5, 2011 Report Share Posted April 5, 2011 You shouldnt grease splines. That just makes it wose. The idea is to keep the splines from moving not lubercate them. Clean the parts up really well and put red lock tight on the splines. Assemble it and torque the axle nut down. Let it sit over night for the red lock tight to dry. That will fix your problem. You might not be able to do it with your hands but getting on the throttle and off will still rock it back and foruth. Excessive torqueing of the axle nuts can cause axle bearings to go out too. Take it appart and clean everything up and put some red lock tight on the axle splines and some inside the hub splines. Put it back together and let it dry for at least a day. 252wheelieking Posted April 8, 2011 Author Report Share Posted April 8, 2011 I found out why my sprocket hub & brake hub was loose, the allen screw in the 3 piece locknut worked it's way loose & the whole 3 piece locknut came loose. it was so loose that I could turn it with my hand. Lucky Me....I tighten it back up with my channel lock pliers & problem solved. Im not going to ride it tho....im going to buy the G-Force axle wrench & torque it to spec. dimwit Posted April 9, 2011 Report Share Posted April 9, 2011 if you can move it back and forth, then the splines are worn, simple as that. tightening the locknut up to the speced torque, which you should do, won't fix this . you may not be able to move it by hand once torqued properly, but a 350 twin will move it. If you want to take the slop out of the worn spline you will need to clean it up and use loctite. I would use the loctite product "bearing retainer" it's specifically designed for jobs like this. The problem here was you must not have used loctite on the allen head bolt in the locknut, they, are what clamps/locks the locknut in place. If they were torqued correctly AND loctited your 3piece lock-nut could not have come loose. I think you will find that most USED, if not all USED splined joints like this will have some amount of "slop". My banshee has, and it is a well maintained quad, also running a brand new g-force axle with OEM sprocket and brake hubs. $30 worth of fancy spanner that your probs only gonna use once is a waste of money, it won't fix ya problem.
