Build Questions

First of all I apologize about being long winded but I figure the more information the better. I am fairly new to the site. I have been reading posts like crazy on everything trying to learn all that I can both here and elsewhere. I bought my banshee about a year and a half ago. It is an '03.

Long story short, the rings broke, taking the domes and pistons with them but didn't hurt the cylinders at all. I have torn the whole thing apart, deciding to do a total rebuild, not just the top end. I am not comfortable with the history of the machine and do not want to do this all again in a couple of months.

Where I ride:

Florida, mostly trails, lots of sand, some gravel and some more sand. I am a teacher and therefore am able to travel a lot during the summer months and plan to spend them exploring different areas starting out with Little Sahara in June and then maybe Hatfield McCoy, also spend a lot of time in upstate NY (Syracuse area) during time off as that is where I am from originally.

My build:

I love the power-band which is why I ride a banshee but in order to make it functional for me I need more bottom end. Enter the serval cat, which leads me to a 4mm crank. This is where my dilemma comes in. Keeping in mind that dependability is extremely important to me and that I'm not all about chasing horsepower numbers, I am thinking about going with a 4mm crank with tz bearings from the two stroke shop. The big claim obviously is that it is balanced while all others are not properly balanced. Is this worth the extra money? To my best estimates it will tun me an extra 300 or so? Anybody have any experience with this? I am all about using the right part the first time, but with so many out there, which is the right part? Obviously billet cranks are out there but I think that that would be way overkill...I would like to keep to pump gas for now but down the road I am going to be looking to bump up the compression and do a EFI E85 conversion but would like to get everything set up conservatively first.

There are obviously many other things to consider, but this is the beginning and I will approach them as I reach them. Any constructive advice, thoughts, ideas, etc. would be appreciated.

Personaly I'm running a 4mil long rod serval. If your cylinders are still good then if I were you I would probably build a 4mil dune port. They make great all around power and can be very reliable motors. If I were you I would contact one of the sight sponcers and see what they have to say. They can set you up with exactly what you want. I had F.A.S.T build my motor and Jeff was a great guy to deal with. I've also heard alot of good things about kevin at HJR. Either one would work but I'm sure any of the sponcers on here would be good. Just call around and get prices and see who you have the best feel for and go from there.

Thanks for the input Jon

So you don't think that the serval is worth it then? I was under the impression that after selling my cylinders it would work out somewhere close to the same money...I definitely plan on using the site sponsors to buy/build everything that i can, heard nothing but good about all of them over and over and over, plan on getting in contact with a few of them before making any decision just like to be thorough with my research and wanted to ask a few of the more experienced people on here first so that I can have all of my ducks in a row first. I guess that my biggest question for now is about the crank because that is where I will start the buildup...should I just go with the hotrods crank or is the tss crank worth the extra cash? What crank are you running?

Anybody else have any thoughts about sticking with the stock cylinders vs buying servals? The stockers are pretty much unmolested right now...

Well I haven't gotten to run my motor yet cause I'm still working on the frame and everything else but from what I've heard it's worth the money. The only reason I said to go dune port is there hasn't been alot of testing done on the serval yet but from what everyone is saying is tgat it doesn't like high compression or race fuel. And I know you said you would like to start going that route later down the road. IMO if you aren't looking for a straight drag bike than serval is tge way to go. I've talked to a few people tgat have the servals and they say that the low rpm power and throttle response is unbeleavable. As far as the crank goes , I run a hot rods from Jeff with his extra weld on it. I don't have much experience with different cranks but every builder has there preference. If you search on here I'm pretty sure there's a thread that talks about all the different cranks out there and pros and cons of them.

First off, give Kevin at Herr Jugs a call and talk to him about the cranks he offers. I have a bottom end rebuild walkthrough in my signature. It will give you a good over-view of what all is involved in it.

If you get a crank that is trued and welded and check the run-out on it when installed, you probably won't need to get it balanced. Take good care of the bike and do the normal routine maintenance and you won't have any issues. Its a common myth that banshees blow up all the time and run like crap. The people who have these problems don't take care of them and don't do the normal stuff every banshee owner should do.

Theres going to be pros and cons for all of it.. As for the crank from TSS.. Waste.. Any of the site sponsors will get you setup with a crank that is just fine for your application without breaking the bank. One thing to remember is that the more parts you use from the guy building the motor, more often then not the better off you are.. If you give your builder a crank that is not his and it goes to shit the first weekend and wrecks a bunch of parts, whos gonna be on the hook to fix it and take care of it? Crank guy? Nope, hes gonna tell you the builder. Builders fault? Nope, hes gonna tell you to talk to the crank guy. Its a visious cycle, but its in your best intrest to use what the builder recomends and will stand behind. As far a the serval/stocker setup is concerned the serval is going to make some more power in different places than a good worked up stock cyld 4 mill. Some will depend on how far you wanna go.. Honestly if this is your first go around I woulndt be affraid to do the 4 stock cyld. You will see heads and tails diffrence from your existing setup, will have good rideability, and you will leave weekend after weekend with a smile on your face. And after that has become "not enough" (it will come to that) then at that point a step up to a serval would be an easy and fairly inexpensive jump.. Either way, welcome to the addiction. Kiss the savings acct goodbye cause its all down hill from here.. And also, Id like to thank you for being a school teacher!! You guys are the most underpaid people on this planet.
