SlowMoe
From what I understand, you pull some of the gears off and remove every other cog from inside the gear. I was thinking it may be possible for someone wthout a machine shop... My question is what gears come off, what gears do you grind on, are there any special tools required and is this all the job entails. Thanks! Oh and also would this be a worthwhile mod on a 75 hp bike or would there need to be a full override for it to shift. Thanks!
camatv
call HJR and see if he will walk you through it for free?>
BigRed350x
Kevin does some great work. In my mind its well worth having him do the work & knowing it was done good. Pulling the gears off the trans shafts is a pain in the butt with all the snap rings and washers. I'd gladly pay him to do it the next time around. lol

dirtydownunder
if your going to pay a machine shop to do it, you may as well get kevin to do it, or at least call up and get a price. all the snap rings and washers have to go on a specific way n shit too. its worth it on a stock bike
banshee332
If you can tear down a motor and put back together you can pull your tranny apart and put back together. Just make sure you keep everything in order
Coupelx
i did mine with a die grinder and a drill press. pull the transmission apart and if it has 6 dogs, remove every other one. profit.

Can you please elaborate on this? How many gears do you grind total? I'm having a hard time visualizing how you use a die drinder and a drill press... What mods do you have and does it shift noticeably better?
Coupelx
sheerider1026 has some really good pics. 2 of the gears have 6 external engagement dogs and 2 of them have 6 internal ones. the external ones you just take and cut every other one off so you only have 3 left. the internal dogs are a bit harder. i used a drill press and sharp bit to remove most of the material and cleaned it up with a die grinder. sheerider did his with a dremel. just spinning it over by had it goes into gear noticeably easier as mine doesnt run yet. sheerider said his shifted awesome. It's kinda hard to see..

It's kinda hard to see.. Yep, that's correct. The gears are hardened so keep that in mind if you want to do it yourself. Make sure you keep them cool as you cut/grind on them. Most professional shops that do this will use carbide bits in an end-mill and a rotary table, and will do the cutting with coolant/lubricant flowing onto the gear while its being cut. hotrodbanshee
are there any downsides to doing this mod?
