I have a few questions.

LONGROD

Recommended Posts

Ok so I picked up a banshee, all in all its a nice quad. it has 28 mm pwk's but the previous owner ground off the the lip on the front of the cabs and im worried the open filters will fall off. any ideas why this would be done. currently put air box on for piece of mind. I would also like to know if there is anyway of telling what kind of crank is in it with out tearing it down, and how I can tell if the head is milled. It seems to be pretty quick for just having the said carbs on it.. and toomy t5 pipes. and boysen dual stage reeds. also what would be a good replacement clutch kit? starting to slip a bit. thanks for the help..

i wonder if he had clearance issues with the carbs while he was trying to install them and that was his ghetto way of making them fit better. The only way that you can find out about your crank is to split the cases.....it sucks. To tell if your head is milled you can do a compression test.......IF its still on a decent top-end it should show you weather its a higher compression indicating that its a milled head. But the sure fire way would be to pull it and measure it.

since you've got all the questions....you may need to just rip the motor down and see whats goin on inside.....plus it'll give you peace of mind as to whats been done.

You would more than likely be able to get a good enough look at the crank just by taking a cylinder off. If it says hotrods, Vesrah, etc on the rod you atleast know it has been rebuilt and you can also see the webs, not 100% accurate but your just curious anyway. If you wonder if it's a 4 mill just pop the head off, if the piston sticks out the top of the jug 2mm thats what you have, unless there's a spacer plate under the cylinders.

It's easy to tell if a stock head has been rechambered for a stroker crank but to tell if it has just been milled would probably require cc'ing the domes, or if there is visible cutter marks on the mating surface.

As far as a replacement clutch goes, I recommend the one Jeff at F.A.S.T sells, it holds alot of power.

If you have a good running motor I wouldnt be tearing it down just to see what you have, run it until it needs rebuilt then check it out.

Yeah that's weird..why he would grind the carbs down who knows :shrugani:

Yeah the real way to know EXACTLY what you just bought is to tear that thing down. You should be able to fine out a decent amount by taking the head off, then the juggs.

Me personally..It's a must knowing every single little part on my banshee. Not knowing if I have a certain part or not would drive me crazy banghead

Take some pics, lets check this bike out

Thanks for the reply. It's a good running bike so don't care to split the cases just yet. I will today pull the head off and post some pics. A while back I pulled intake off to seal them up with 1211 and see what type of reeds it had.. the black was coming off but did not appear to be any grind marks. So I'm guessing no port work. And from what I could see cylinders still had lots of cross hashing making me think top end is pretty fresh

No. I had one when I was 19. So 11 yrs ago. I didn't really have a clue then. It had a milled head sat pipes. V .2 reeds and was ported. Don't remember it being really faster then this one. My buddy just put his together he has a drag port thunder pipes and 35mm ons and I can spank him. He swore mine must be built now I know his stuff just isn't working so well together.
