This happens alot with Banshees. I don't know if this fits your situation, but guys get a machine that was owned and modded by someone else. They get on and ride it figuring the other guy had it working fine so why worry. (Or you change a part and hope it won't need jetting because checking jetting is tiresome.) Well, many times Banshees get ridden in slower situations most of their life. Lot's of 3-4 gear stuff. Very little time in 5-6 totally wound out with the throttle pinned. So the previous owner thought the jetting was fine. You might own it for a while and think the same thing. Problem is, the day you find a nice flat turf farm or flat open field and decide to let her totally rip, you find out your jetting at Wide Open Throttle is too lean......you find it out the hard way. (This happens to the sled guys too, the first time they make a run across a frozen lake!) This leads people to think you can't run WOT for a long time. You can if your jetted safe. 99% of the time if your machine gets hot, it's jetting. Sometimes it can be that your going very slow and running with high revs in 1-2 gear. But most situations involving a Banshee that's running hot....it's jetting. I'd say that was the issue you had going on in the field. Detonation can cause electrodes to bend and the ceramic of the plugs as well as ground straps to crumble, fail and melt. This is most likely the reason for the piston damage. Another possibility would be an air leak in a motor seal or a failed crank or rod bearing going through and getting chewed up. But I'd start with looking into your jetting. Dump your head pipes out and see if there is any bits and pieces in there.......See if you can tell if it's leftover plug pieces, or metal bearing bits.

I'm sure if you can post pics, other members will tell you for sure what went down.

So you've burned up a top end......welcome to the club. ;)

ok well i think your all right, i think my dad over heated it right before i got on it, cuase he was flying 6th pinned, so then i hopped on and took it for spin and it died, well i just took the top end off, the piston skirt exploded but all the peices were in the exhaust, or atleast most of them, so what should i do? total rebuild, or jsut top end?

Welcome to the HQ!!! Since you said the skirt is shattered then there is only one real course of action....your gonna need to split the cases to ensure that no pieces of the piston skirt made its way down into the cases. And while your in there....you might want to see about sending your crank out to a site sponsor and having them true and weld your crank to help prevent any damage that can occur from modding the motor. Also have your cylinders checked out for scoring or wear marks and ring lips from the damage.....and take them to a shop to have them checked for being out of round. that way you will know if you need to have the cylidners bored/honed. if you do then you shoudl also send those out to our site sponsors....they are all awsome guys to work with and will do an awsome job on your juggs. I send my stuff to Jeff at F.A.S.T. Racing and had him recently port my cylinders......seeing that your motors going to be apart you may want to think about having some engine work done.....as you wont have to disassemble the motor a second time when your itchin for more power....

i would like to do that, but im on a budget, since my dad blew it up,he payin, and hes cheap, i got a friend who will rebuilt the motor for about 100, plus parts, so imma just go the cheap way

ok i can understand the being on a budget thing. But there are a few things that you should do to insure that your not gonna have problems again. Make sure it gets checked out at a reputable machine shop....if they meausre it and say its outta spec then its gotta get bored. But make sure they know to chamfer the ports so it doesn't break the ring. And order pirstons from Jeff at FAST or a site sponsor.....believe it or not they can get you the wiseco pistons (pro-lites) for cheap....probably cheaper than you can find anywhere else. And the pro-lites are ALOT more durable than the rest of the pistons out tehre.....they can take a serious beating.

ok, well i can already get pistons for 60 a peice, that includes rings, wrist pins, needle bearings and so on and also what should i run it on 25:1? i mean once it gets rebuilt. and thanks for all the help, but since my dad is paying for it since he either over revved it, or over heated it, hes gonna want to go the cheap way, which isnt sending anything out to FAST or any other places, so im kinda boned there, bu wat all should i do to it, for the rebuild?

just make sure your dad understands that you get what you pay for when you take the cheap way out.

That would be why one of Jeff's sayings is "you can go broke trying to save money"

If you cheap out now....its WILL cost you more to go back replace the shit you put in it cause it was a good price than it would to just put in the quality stuff the first time.

well tell your dad to look at it this way....those $60 pistons are probably so cheap because they are cast....cast pistons aren't the greatest and when they let go they tend to REALLY mess things up inside. Now if you were to get a set of 513 Wiseco pro-lite FORGED pistons...they will be FAR superior to the cast. They will hold up to extra mods (current OR future) and they will take a serious beating and continue to run hard. I think Jeff at FAST can get them for you for around $180 which inclues the normal stuff (piston/wrist pin/Cir-clips). Yes i know its $60 more than you can get cast pistons. But alot of us on here have seen what happens when you run no name pistons.....ALOT of the times it doesn't turn out good. But you could save yourself alot of heart-ache and stress by payin out the extra $60.......think of it as a small insurance policy.

Those $60 pistons are JUNK do not waste your time or money on them.. Have you pulled the motor apart yet and looked at the crank? I get the feeling that you think your gonna be able to put a set of pistons in it and go... Thats not gonna work out either... You need to pull the motor completely apart and get a good look at EVERYTHING...
