stubburn flywheel

Recommended Posts

idk...i wouldn't really use anything, except mabey a thin film of 0wt oil, like wd-40, or something. the flywheel needs to stick for it to work, and i don't really know what affect the loctite will have on the seat. i've actually installed taper seats that had shipping oil, or engine oil on out on the road without issues

The seizure we found is most common from "fretting". This is familiar to us in the machine tool world. Basically the tapers do not mate correctly and there is movement at that junction and that causing heating and eventually welding.

We just repaired a member's bike where this happened and ruined the brand new crank and flywheel. We typically put a film of oil on the taper to help it come apart. There is enough pressure in that taper to hold it from moving if assembled correctly.

It is also HIGHLY recommended to test the runout or TIR of the flywheel each time it is remounted to ensure it does not wobble excessively which will cause this fretting issue.

I've had to weld the puller on before...never had one that had to be cut off, welding always worked for me.

Antiseize prolly isn't a great idea.

Get some lapping compound on the new one and match the flywheel to crank surfaces that way, then wipe off the excess.
