New member, newly acquired '98 Banshee

Hi, new member and new Banshee owner. I acquired this thing today through trade. I don't think it's worth a fortune or anything but I got rid of something I had absolutely ZERO interest in and little value and ended up with someones project bike. I'm very mechanically inclined when it comes to modern 4 stroke cars, trucks, and motorcycles and I understand 2 strokes but have only had a couple. I had a '01 Blaster and a '98 Sea Doo XP but didn't tinker much with either. And now I have this thing...

Dude claims the bottom end had a lot of work done but I can't verify it so I don't know what's down there. He says it's a 4mm, welded crank, and wiseco .020 over piston. It has a Cool Head on it, Toomey T5 pipes, twist throttle, 11"+ extended swing arm. He bought lots of billet stuff that looks great but some one also spray painted a lot of it, including the frame, and that looks like crap.

It's dirty but kicks over and compression tests good at 130psi. The radiator doesn't leak but it looks like someone got mad and tried to kick it in LOL. It's missing random stuff like an air box of some sort and the plastics look like crap. I'm deciding what to do with it. Any suggestions?

Welcome.

Bike looks like it has potenial for sure.

Crazy how he put the silencers.

I would for sure off that swing arm or for sure run the stock dog bone link with it. Thats a CRAZY bad angle on that rear shock having no link.

Good deal.

I say keep it, mod it more and make it 100% right and you will love it for years to come.

Have a look around the forums and do some reading, TONS of info, or just ask here.

First things first, fix those silencers, theres noway thier the same length mid-pipes so prob both sides will have to be jetted different, i would just redo the mid pipes the correct way, definately fix that rear shock, get an airbox and ride that sucker mandingo...

Thanks for the input guys, I wouldn't have known about the mid pipes and shock angle discrepancies. I'll address those before I take it out. Yeah, it's missing the chain too but I don't like the crazy swing arm on it so I think I'm going to put a stock or at least shorter swing arm on, then get the chain. I found a good radiator for $15 and I'm sure I can find an air box for cheap. Hopefully it'll ran after that!

Welcome to the one and only BHQ. Looks like you got yourself a project there, but dont get frustrated and dont listen to the ones that say that it looks rough some of them guys here own banshees but dont really know shit about them and dont really listen to anyone trying to help them. Well one of them anyway. You definitely came to right place for info, tech and parts. Theres plenty of knowledgeable people and some kickass sponsers . As far as a swinger if that thing is really a 4mil I wouldnt go shorter then stock on the swinger. I personally run a +4 swinger and love it its still good in the trails and when I drag I can still launch without the fear of flipping.

Looks decent man...no big deal to turn that thing around real quick....that marblebag f'd up the way the silencers mount.....its one on each side of the frame FYI.........Plastics look good,...Engine will look really sweet with a clean up and some spit shine........

I would get rid of that swingarm as well......

You know what to do if you had other quads......take off the plastics.....proceed from there....check ball joints and tightness all around the bike......pick a part...clean/ paint....and put it back on and eventually it will be pretty sweet

Well I started digging into it today for fun. I decided to comp test it myself today for fun because my bro in law didn't write down the numbers and couldn't remember exactly what they were. He said he thought it was like 13xpsi and within a couple psi of each other. After doing it myself, holy high compression batman! 169psi right and 168psi left. Looks like a race gas only engine. If I use 110, what oil mix should I use? No wonder he thought he needed a foot longer swing arm, this thing might end up being a beast...

But besides being dirty and spray painted, it's actually not too haggard. The wiring is a little weird. He cut out the key ignition module and put an on/off switch and it has 3 things I'm unsure about. The two plugs in the picture aren't plugged into anything and the box in the background that's attached to the frame has 3 cut wires coming out. Anyone know what they were? This stuff is directly under where the gas tank sits.

And I took off the ghetto silencer set up. It looks like he heated up one of the pipes with a torch and bent it to fit like that :( I really don't want to bend it back and screw it up even more so hopefully a replacement isn't too expensive.

Other than that, the chassis is straight, the suspension is intact and seems fine with the exception of the rear set up, but that'll change. The brakes are intact but don't have any fluid in them :( Hopefully nothing expensive pops up with those. The pads looks like crap so I'll probably replace those. How do you handle the rotors? Surfacable on quads or just replace them?

Thanks for the input and welcomes and thank you to anyone who's willing to answer my newb questions :D

The box that has the 3 wires cut can be taken off the frame and tossed in the trash. It’s an OEM safety feature that was junk. The other 2 plugs are part of the same system. They aren’t needed. Have fun with it
