bansheeman_05
Well I just recently got some Lonestar +2+1 j arms for my 87 rebuild. I am in the market for aftermarket shocks and I am contemplating a few options. I would really not like to spend anymore than $500 on a set. I do mostly trail riding, with some hill climbing, and strippings riding. Do you guys think that Elka Stage 1's would be good for what I do. I see that you can get a set of Works Steelers with resi's for like $550. Would that be a large upgrade? Or should I just save an extra $150 and go with the low end Works shocks? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks
GrMeyer
Im a BIG fan of Elka's. I have had nothing but probs with Works. But you might want to try and look around and see if you can find a set of used pair of shocks that offer Compression and Rebound adj. So Cal Suspension
Works makes an excellent shock, for the money. I used to think Elka's were top of the line, but not anymore. Axis takes the cake in my book. Elka's and Axis are both over priced for what they are, really; but you don't have any other options. For the average rider, a properly set up pair of Works shocks will be indeterminably different than Elka's, or Axis. The fact of the matter is, there are only so many different piston designs, and types of valving setups. You have static valving, and progressive valving. Elka and Axis use static, Works, TCS (Now out of business), and PEP use progressive. When you buy Axis or Elka, primarily you are paying for the name, and pretty billet parts, frankly. The key is, you can never OVER DO suspension, but don't spend more on suspension than you feel comfortable with. Again, any shock that is set up properly, will outperform the most expensive shock off the shelf. Just my two cents... but what do I know about shocks? Michael Jackson
I see that you can get a set of Works Steelers with resi's for like $550. Would that be a large upgrade? Or should I just save an extra $150 and go with the low end Works shocks? Let me know what you guys think. AT steelers ARE works "low end" shock - with or without rezzies, they are still the cheapest shocks works sells, but they work great, especially compared to the stock ones. everytime people say "works shocks" i automatically assume they are talking about AT Steelers because no one ever seems to spend the money on works more expensive shocks like the pro series or the black widows. i guess at that point they figure theyd rather have the name elka on the side of them if they are spending that much money. i dont understand why works cheapest shocks,at steelers, are always compared to elkas, when they make several models of shocks. i would be interested to hear from someone who has ran both elkas and works pro series or black widows shocks, and not just comparing AT steelers to a set of elkas that cost twice as much anyway, i think youd be really happy with a set of AT steelers, they are a huge improvement over stock
bansheeman_05
I think I have decided to go with Works Steelers as long as I don't find a nice set of used Elka's or Axis in the meantime. Now do you guys think I should spend the extra buck and get rezi'z??
GrMeyer
I have ran the Works Pro and Elkas Dunes. I know Matt can valve the shit out of some shocks and has helped me greatly on helping me rebuild my shocks. And when I get to meet him in person he will get some drinking from me. Here is the story on why I dont like Works. I had the Pro Series 3-way adjustable damping piggyback shocks with triple-rate spring on my raptor. They worked great for the trials for when I had gotten them. Sent Works the rear shock to have it revalved. What a big mistake that was. I had sent them back the shock 3 different times because the valving was always to soft. Had them put my stock piston set up back on and havent looked back. Went to the dunes and rode them for about 45 mins and the shocks started to fade. I mean this is some fast duning with jumping. Get off quad and the shocks are HOT. Called Works and sent them back to have them fix what ever they need to do. Month later, go them back and finished the dunes season with the same damn prob happening. Moved to Elkas Dune Edition with compression and rebound adj with triple rate spring. They have been right from the day the package got to my door. After 3 years of hard duning I just now rebuild them. Went for a ride not to long ago and just like new. I now have 4quads that have elkas, 2 with the pogo's and 2 with the dunes edition, and a LT rhino with elkas. I have yet to try other brands of shocks and I would love to. But I dont have pockets to keep trying different things. I wish I would have known Matt awhile back and would have sent him the works shocks and not back to the factory. All in all. Im happy with Elka and not with Works. Not with the shocks, but with the customer service I got. I have a buddy I ride with that had the same works shocks I had and has great luck with them. And still has them.
