Cub and Cheetah?

This seems like a great forum. I hope you'll pardon the newbie question, but I couldn't find the answer in searches. I'm new to Banshees. My business partner and I have been hitting the dunes every week this summer on a KFX, Raptor and my trusty KX250, but I've wanted a Banshee since I was a kid. I found a 2001 a few weeks ago with low hours for $1500 and jumped on it. I took it out last week and the thing rips. I can see how guys dump so much money into Banshees because I already want more power. The handling isn't great, but I've been reading up on ways to change that.

Enough with the preface.... I've noticed guys referring to cub motors and Cheetah motors a lot. I'm not sure what this means.... My best guess is that it's a term for referring to big blocks and small blocks? Maybe I'm completely off on that?

I ask because I'm already looking at ways to get more power. I have to keep my spending down a bit for a little while since my wife doesn't even know I bought it (the joys of a secret business account). I've just ordered a repair manual, a boost bottle, a steering dampner, and I'm looking for some front shocks now. My second question is what are the most cost effective bolt on's for more power that don't require tearing the motor apart? I've only pulled a few motors apart in my life, but if you guys say the best performance mod is internal, I'll do it. I'm definitely hooked.

welcome to BHQ ! ditch the boost bottle they do nothing and get in the way of the fuel lines and crack the carb boots. a timing plate is a good mod, pipes,a good airfilter and get rid of the air box lid, a coolhead with smaller domes or have the stock head milled, get rid of the tors they are problems. a good set of reeds.

ya....ditch the boost bottle. and like said....get some aftermarket pipes. What kind of riding do you do? FMF Fatties make for some really good trail pipes as they are more of a midrange power pipe. You can also pull your cylinders off and send them out to a builder that is a sponsor on this site and have them ported....from what i've heard its a BIG kick in the pants from stock power.

Thanks guys. It has Toomey T-5 pipes and an aftermarket filter on it now, but is otherwise stock. I pretty much spend all of my time riding at the sand dunes. It sounds like my best power options are to mill the head, or pull my cylinders and have them ported. I'll contact some of the site sponsors and look into porting in a few months when there's enough snow to pull the sled out. I'll just focus on improving the handling until then. Maybe I'll buy a second set of stock cylinders to have the machine work done.

You guys are great- much kinder to new posters than some of the other types of forums I've been on. Thanks for the advice.

Welcome to the HQ  . You are on a dangerous path my friend. The addiction for more power cannot be cured.

It seems like every time I get into a hobby thinking it will be affordable..... I end up with an angry wife, and thousands of dollars that mysteriously disappeared. :shootself:

a cheetah is ussaly a larger bore, powervalved(or block off plates) motor using dm style domes and head w/ cr 250 reed valves. this mean stock banshee componets will not fit from the head up. cubs are a less intense version of the cheetah and u can still use most cool heads and stock style reeds and intakes. these are more favorable because the are cheaper in multipul ways(build and rebuild) and can run with the cheetahs with a fraction of the spending. ive had both a cheeth and a cub, id say go with a 4mill cub with blaster pistons. this makes a extremly powerful motor with the cheapest rebuild cost. keep in mind, most aftermarket cylinders require nikisil and cannot be bore. other alternatives are porting boring and stroking your stock componets. i for one dont like stock :)

And I thought I knew a fair amount about 2 stroke motors..... smiley-shocked028.gif I don't know anything.

It looks like I'll need to do some homework between now, and when the snow gets deep. I had no idea that guys were pulling so much horsepower from modified Banshee motors. If I could add another 20 HP to what I already have, I think I would be happy..... for a while.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I'll start looking into a 4 mm cub set up.

My boost bottle came in the mail yesterday. Looks like I won't be needing it.....
