Billet Gears

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if doing a billet gear change on a duneable 1-5 N Down will be worth it? I blew out my second gear over the weekend. Second gear is the bread and butter, gets alot of use. I hillclimb and run it hard. Usually start in it, shift out of it, and then end up back in it.

There are some guys around here that ride them harder than me, yet don't have problems with the regular 2nd or 3rd gears. I know a guy running one for 5-6 years and puts a hurtin' on his, and it never gave out yet.

Maybe I got unlucky?

But how much stronger are the billet 2nd gears than the standard cut 2nd gears in the over ride? Will it justify the load of money it would cost to upgrade to the billet second gear over just replacing the gear I have now with the same one?

Wondering if it's worth throwing that kinda money into this gear... or just try to replace it to the way it was, hoping it was just a weak link?

We shift them under a load without the clutch from 2nd to 3rd. I never backload it, just need it to shift on the fly on the hills. It worked great until it went.

Thanks

I'd say you're probably more around 90HP. That's not really enough power to warrant billet second gear. I ran my 10mm Cub for 4 years with a stock 2nd gear doing hard 2nd gear launches over and over and shifting with an override and never had any issues. I'd say that you just had a shitty second gear. Now, if it's going to make you feel a lot better, by all means spend the $300 or so and go billet. I run billet 2nd in my 18mm DM now.

That's the opinion I am looking for. Basically it won't warrant it because chances are, I had a shitty gear from the start, or had something happen that usually doesn't under the conditions I used it in.

We basically ride them like you do... launch hard in one gear, and either ride that gear out or shift on the fly up the hill into 3rd, etc.

Forget the billit for now, try sending your new gear set to 300 Below for some cryo treatment. I believe WCR has great rates on cryo treatment as well. Just not sure if they are doing it them selves or sending it out. Either way, pretty good investment. Also talked to John Stallworth today actually, and he swears by micro polishing. Just a thought.

Sorry to Jack you thread guys. But i just got back from riding my 421 with 1-5 override. Out of the blue its shifting HARD under load going IN and OUT of second gear. shifts like butter in 3,4,5..... did i damage second gear??? or bend a shift fork??....

again sorry to butt in.

Could be either. Seems like since it shifts easily in the rest of the gears that it may just be 2nd though. I'd probably pull it apart.

Any idea on the rates for that?

Not off hand. I have a print out that he sent me about a year ago for shifter cart and motorcycle pricing, but I need to dig it up. I had my entire motor done for $350.00. They tried to up the price after realizing how many parts were actually in a banshee motor compared to the lil 250cc motors they usually run for the cart guys though. Should be around 150 for all the tranny parts though.

Just out of curiosity I looked at WCR. Their rates are pretty bad ass! http://www.w-c-r.com/PRICING.htm

Not many people really know what it really is but trust me the cryo treatment is hands down the best investment in any banshee with big power. Loco, a bike like yours would definitely benifit from athe cryo process. Take a peek in the automotive racing community. There are alot of guys with parts that just don't hold up, and don't have any aftermarket options yet. But once the parts are cryoed no more worries. Check out 300below.com as well. The applications are endless.
