Stock internals about to change, need advice.

Hey guys, I have a 2004 banshee that I use for trail riding and "free riding" (aimlessly climbing hills, jumping, little bit of drag racing, even play on the mx track sometimes) I bought the banshee used in 07 and I'm pretty sure it's never been rebuilt so I've started tearing it down, going to do all the bearings and bushings in the front and rear suspension, new sprockets n chain, plastic, graphics...pretty much freshen it up a bit. But my main focus is doing some internal mods to the engine, I'm sending my cylinders away to get ported and I don't really know where to go from there, I want to keep my reliability but still have a nasty machine when I grab a handful of throttle. I was thinking about getting a 4mil crank, stock rod length but I've never done such a thing so I dont know what I need...I dont want to run a stroker plate because from what I've been reading, you sacrafice performance with the plates, so I need domes I think? But what do I need to do to make the domes work? any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated...I'm very lost when it comes to internal engine mods. Also, what is the performance difference between a 4 mil crank stock rod length vs 4 mil long rods? I'm leaning towards stock rods because it only makes sense that they would be less likely to break. Here's a pic>>>

talk to the guy doing your port work he can recomend the style for you, who is doing your port work? I would go with a site sponsor all of them are good and well known so you get what you paid for. I went with F.A.S.T racing! do you have a head that you can change domes in or a stock head? those heavy wheels are eating up a lot of horsepower!

Haha! I like my rims...although I broke and had to replace 2 of them, not even riding that hard. I'd like to throw some hipers on there eventually. A buddy of mine has an uncle that owns a powersports shop and he is going to do the cylinders for free. I don't know they guy because I'm in North Carolina and hes in New Hampshire so...I just wanted some input and and maybe hear from someone running a similar set up.

Stock head...shows how much I know and the wheels are actually pretty light but I'm going to change them eventually, not to worried about it.

Hmm, I would be a little leary of a free port job. It takes alot of time and know how to port a set of cylinders correctly. Maybe you'll be getting a kickass set, but I would be a little worried about it. Sounds like a 4mil mx port would be right up your alley. Or maybe you could wait just a little bit and try a new set of those Serval cat cylinders that M&M is playing with. I would really like to hear some feedback on some real world testing.

Well two of my buddies and I have a mx race team together and jesse (one of the dudes on the team) has an uncle who owns a dealership and so he hooks us up with free riding gear, parts and service when he can. The other 2 guys are getting their heads ported rightnow for free, on 07 rmz250 and a 07 trx450r. They were going to do my yfz but I don't want to tear into it because I just got it back from the dyno so the guys said they would port my banshee cylinders for me, they've done countless banshee engines over the years or atleast that's what they tell me. Thanks for the advice guys, I'm anxious to get this thing beef'd up and runnin!

Umm, nobody has brought this up yet, but if you are going to go with a 4 mil, you need to have your cylinders ported for a 4 mil. The port timing is different for a 4 mil and you may or may not be able to correct it for a 4 mil if it has already been ported for a stock stroke motor. If you do go 4 mil, I would recomend going long rod, it puts less stress on everything with the longer rod and you just have to run a 795 series piston instead of a 513 series. You will still need the stroker domes or a plate to compensate for the stroke, the 795 series piston just compensates for the long rod.

Yea, this is the kind of info I've been waiting for, I have owned 2 banshees and have never done internal mods so I don't know these things. Thanks a bunch man! I just ride the machines...I don't work on them :headbang: (i wish)

That still doesn't mean they know what they are doing. Porting a 4 stroke head is much easer than porting 2 stroke cylinders. With the 4 stroke head your just trying to improve air flow. With a 2 stroke your opening the ports up. When you make them taller your changing when the air and fuel enter the cylinder and when the exhaust exits. You also need to know to make the ports at the right angles. Other wise the fresh air and fuel will blow right out the exhaust port.

Porting a 2 stroke is like putting a performance camshaft in a 4 stroke. The cam changes when and how long the valves stay open. The same goes for 2 stroke ports.

You wouldn't let some one weld up and regrind a camshaft to run in in a 4 stroke that doesn't know what they are doing would you? Even though it is free? banghead

Throw a 4 mill crank in there. Now you have the piston falling 2mm farther down the bore and popping up 2mm out of the bore, this drastically affects the port timings, and the cylinders needed to be ported to correct it. I would highly suggest having a Banshee SPECIFIC shop do the porting. They know what they are doing, they specialize in it. Unless you really don't care how it runs, but want to brag "It's Ported" and it didn't cost me anything. :rotflmao:

Do your self a favor and pony up the cash and let Jeff @ FAST do your port work for ya. As said earlier if your going 4mil your cylinders will need to be ported for it and if your boy hasnt told you that I wouldnt let him do shit. On 4 pokes your really only getting the head ported and a 2 stroke involves the cylinder not the head. Another question is do you have a cool head yet and if so is this dude going to cut domes for you for free also? If this dude dont port shees on a regular basis I wouldnt let him touch it. And your looking to spend at least $1200 to do a proper 4mil build. Just remember you can spend a dollar trying to save a quarter.

I WAS just going to do the cylinders and new pistons but I figured as long as I have the motor apart, I wanted to put a 4 mil crank into it, I never mentioned it to the other guys yet so the dude that was going to do my cylinders assumes that I was leaving it stock. I don't have a cool head, but I'm getting one. 1200 isnt bad, less than I thought.
