stock air filter box and K&N, warning

Recommended Posts

Went out riding at the local sandpit a few days ago and got a nasty surprise. I had gone over my machine pretty thouroughly before i left and had air filter off as ive been havin a helluva time gettin my pilot jetting right, as of late, and spend alot of time tryin to get my carbs tuned satisfactorily, anyhow, in the evening after a satisfying afternoon of rippin around the pits i pop off my air filter and dear god what do i see...my carb throats and intakeboots nicley coated with a thick layer of sand!! after i got done havin a fit and rran out of four letter words i found that the foam ring that is glued between the white filter mount and the air box had become unglued an pulled away on the bottom side of the filter, letting in a good flow of unfiltered air/sand all afternoon, to make matters even worse i have probly only ridden10 hours or less on a new top end build, thankfully there doesnt seem to be any damage or loss of power yet, wish i knew just how much dirt it ate, funny thing is, i had just read about similar incidents on this forum a day or so before i had this happen!

Bottom line is i hope this post makes other guys check there filter mounts an possibly saves them an engine and alotta frustration

nope, my filter is a regular K&N, but it mounts to a white plastic bracket which is bolted to my air box, in between the bracket and airbox is a foam ring / gasket. The foam ring is glued to the white plastic mount but if it comes unglued it appears to get pushed out from between the mount an the airbox an you end up with a 1/4" gap between the filter mounting bracket an the air box. i used sealent an got it good an sealed now but i also ordered pod filters to end this from happening again. i figure it will be a helluva lot easier popping the carbs on an off with the factory air box outa the way to

Yep, had the same thing happen to me..... sand ate the top end due to the stupid fuckin foam ring not staying sealed up. I'm just hoping in my case it didn't eat the crank bearings, I had to flush them out with shit load of premix to get the sand out.

Need to get the Pro Design adapter and get the clamp on style filter for use in the stock air box !!!

yeah I also have the K&N for the stock airbox and was going to upgrade to the pods but I keep hearing about the pods falling off so i decided to customize my stock airbox. I removed the lid and cut the sides and bottom off the box, and bolted the cage. so basically all I have left is the front and it uses the stock frame mounts to support it. Finished it off with a outerwear, Looks good and works great.

I did this mod after I went trail riding in Saint Helen up here in Michigan, After a 16 mile loop of sandy dusty trails using the stock airbox with lid my K&N was packed full of dirt and sand. Now I don't have that problem. We have 3 banshees in our group with this mod and no issues yet.
