bansheeqc
I looking for some input to compare the conventional lockup style (Direct drive, matoon, modquad etc) VS the slingshot,vito...style lockup. I think for the price, the slingshot is best, but for tuning? With no quick cover, it's more complicated... So, for holding HP and have the capacity to slip out of the hole, but hold after, DD or slingshot it's the best??? thank you
bbcmudtruck
I can slip out of the hole with my dd lockup. Its all in how you setup your springs. You can run light springs and slip outta the hole a little bit if needed. The one draw back to running a dd style with a cover is the clearance for your brake lever is severely reduced. I run nerfbars on my bike and it was a real pain in the ass to get the brake to clear the cover comfortably.
dajogejr
I've run both...they work. I believe the slingshot has more holding power for the bigger motors. The drawback of the slingshot is you have to be careful when removing it so the ball bearings don't go all over. Mine has two set screws that hold both plates together so this doesn't happen. But I'll be damned if I haven't lost those screws the day I installed it...LOL. Get whichever fits your budget better. They both work. BANSHEE HP
turn the bike on its side, all the oil will go to the trans and with the clutch level its easier to remove/install and the balls just stay put. the driveline performance slingshot style is very nice, my last clutch lasted 3 years with it(100+hp,asphalt+sand)and i like that you use the stock cover for a stealthy look
dajogejr
Yep...that's how I've done it. But I have an aftermarket cover. I have long primary springs...and it's kinda a PITA. But, not a deal breaker by any means. Kevin Gigot gave me a great deal to try one and I've left it on since, it works!
dragbanshee98
i have been looking into getting a lockup as well, is there any draw backs to running one without an override? using the clutch alot tend to hurt its overall wear and tear resistance? never really see guys using them around here without an override is all. shanYE west
I've used both also.. I agree with Dave.. I think the Slingshot does have the better holding potential. Both equally adjustable. Here the only negative I got with the "stealth slingshot". You can't fit it through a modded cover. I hated having to drain the coolant and trans oil everytime I needed to get to teh clutch pack. But all in all.. I think there about the same. Pick your flavor.

Tough call. If you take a lot of weight off it...in my opinion, you should be ok. The lockups job is that it locks the clutch based on wheel speed and transmission speed. The problem with that is when you want to shift. And lets face it...if banshees shifted so well, over rides and all the other shift mod remedies would have never been invented. In my opinion...you may have a tough time shifting. But there are people that swear on using a lockup for trail/dune bikes that do not have an over ride and they shift fine. dajogejr
I suppose one day I won't be so lazy...LOL. I do have to tear it down again, maybe I'll just go to the store and get the small machine screws needed to make life easier...

I might add that I believe the slingshot (at least the vito's) is heavier than the direct drive+stock pressure plate/outer hub, though I haven't weighed them. RagunCajun
Vitos lockup here. My only complaint is having to tip the bike over to mess with the clutch. But it was cheaper so I sent with it and glad i did. Btw I have the stealth version. Stealth is nice Edited July 29, 2010 by RagunCajun
stroking
wicked told me a few years ago that a lockup is NOT needed unless your running a 10mil cub or bigger motor.
J-Madd
Man you'd be changing clutches every few passes without a lockup, imo. I'd say anything over 80hp and drag racing needs one.
