Banshee cold starting issue

Recommended Posts

I did a search before I even thought about starting a new thread and couldn't really find enough info for my current issue. I'm having problems starting my banshee after it has set for a day or two.

My engine is fresh and I have loads of compression, my carbs are clean, and air filter is clean. If I shoot a little premix gas into the carbs she will fire right up on the first kick every time. If I let the engine run for 5 minutes then shut it off for a few hours, then go try and start her again she fires back up on its own first kick?

Once it's started it idles and runs like a dream. After the engine is warm and I take it down the road it will bog out a little before hitting the power band like it's getting to much fuel. Now I have not been on it that hard yet cause my engine is fresh and only has maybe 2 hours on it tops. I'm running 32:1 klotz super techniplate for break in then will switch back to 40:1.

I'm running 260 mains, needle clips are in the middle, stock pilots, A/F screw is out 1.5 turns. My mods are in my sig.

the more it sits the harder it will be...u are using the choke? sometimes u need to kick it slow just to pump fuel around then give it a good starting kick.....the bog may be in your pilots..or need le adjustment

So kicking hard wont prime the engine and kicking slow will??? Sounds ridiculous but I'll try it. Yes I'm using my choke.

its just a tactic i seen a lot of people do....just kick slow so u dont kill yOURSELF heavy oil concentraion sitting in the carbs will make for a slow start

try kicking over with the kill switch in the off position that will prime it whether you kick it slow or fast. If you just rebuilt you could have an air leak. The choke tube missing???? Maybe the float needles arent sealing and all your fuel is leaking out when it sits. Or if you just added more power to it which would be more air flow and it could be jetted to lean. Cuz it would run real good lean when warm and have trouble starting cold because that is when it needs the most fuel. these suggestions are just my opinion maybe someone who actually knows what they are talking about will chime in......LOL

It's to lean on the pilots. Most after market exhaust systems require a 27.5 pilot jet in the stock carbs, to be jetted properly. Get some 27.5 pilots, put them in, and start out with your air mixture screws at 1.5 turns open. Adjust them from there, as needed.

I agree i just could not remember the size.....

okay I was thinking I was going to need bigger pilots but wanted to hear it first. I'm also going to make a leak down tester and make sure I dont have an air leak. I don't believe I added any power when I rebuilt it but guess I may have. Removed the boost bottle that was on it when I bought her and added 65mm wiseco pistons. Guys think I should bump my mains up to a 270 or keep them at the 260's?

Do a plug chop, once you get the pilots put in, but you should have at least 280, or 290 mains in the carbs. I ran 320 mains with the same setup, but your elevation is going to affect the jetting, also.

Damn it I knew I should have waited to order my pilots until I got a reply on the mains. I just ordered my pilots from Vito's guess I can always call him Monday and add the mains. My elevation is around 800 feet.

If you have taken the snorkel off of the lid, I'd say you will end up around 310, or 320 on the mains. You should order mains in sizes from 280-320. It's an addiction. LOL

My last banshee I had 66mm pistons, trail porting, pro circuit exhaust and no air box lid and I was only at 300 mains and 27.5 pilots. Really think I need to be jetting in the 300 range? That is correct im not running the snorkel.

290 mains are what I ran with FMF Fatties, foam air filter in the box, with the lid on. Once I went to a K&N in the box, I had to use 320 mains. Sooner, or later, you're going to need some different sizes of mains. Temperature changes, elevation changes, future mods, and so on. Having only a few different sizes of main jets is going to be a pain, because you'll have to go buy them somewhere, and won't have them right there, when you need them.
