Banshee Runs for 15 minutes, then locks up

Hey,

I just bought a 88' Banshee from a guy yesterday. At his house, it started first kick, and i rode it for probably 10 minutes with no problems all the way through the gears, up and down the road. Today when i go out let it warm up about 10 mintues, and go for a ride, about 15 minutes of easy riding up the hill, it starts sputtering and about 150yds later, it stalled out. After sitting there for a second trying to think what happened, I tried to kick it and the kickstart was locked........after it cooled down, i was able to kick it again, but didnt try to start it. I am thinking it overheated and locked up? But is there anything I should know? All the fluids are brand new in it.....and I'm running Klotz 40-1.

Might want to pull pipes off , look in ex port to see if you melted it down. Even pull plugs first to see if there is any specks of aluminum on them. Closely inspect carb boots for rips or tears/cracks , air leaks. If it wasn't a lean burndown check waterpump for breakage, might have severely overheated it. Welcome to BHQ !!

what's the story on the topend? whay is it all new fluids? if it is a brand new topend, then it could've been too tight, and/or not broken in right, or not at all when you got it. if it has been sitting for a long ass time, then a number of things could have happened from rusted up rings/cyl to drystarts or old buildup gumming the rings. could also be a new-old oil compatibility problem. did you run/drain the old premix out before filling it with clots?

The top end was all redone 2 years ago, according to the guy I bought it from, all the fluids are new because two nights ago when I bought it I replaced them just incase there was a problem in them. I checked the plugs and there isnt any shavings on them, I called the guy and he said it has been sitting in the garage not moved for about 5 months.....other then to show it to me to start it and buy it, and it started first kick from cold, and ran awesome. Possibly seals, valves, and rings rotted?

there is not going to be balls or shavings of aluminum on the plug, persay. if it was detonating, it might show a little gray, if bad, or a ltittle may not show at a glance. you have to get a bright light and magnifying glass, mabey reading glasses and read the plug. some specs might show up. at this point, i would just go ahead and at least tear down for a hone/re-ring, which shouldn't be too much, and you can inspect the pistons, cyls, and crank. at the minimum, locking up like that could mean that it's gummed up, but could be as bad as melted piston or crank problems. you'll need a clymers, which you can get online, and e-copies, or right at your local dealer. open it up and see what's going on, then you'll know what you need to buy

and for the record a two stroke does have valves. if it didnt how does it produce compression.... its a reed valve.... ok.

Thge purpose of a reed valve is to prevent reversion into the carb, not to build compression.To build compression, you have to have all holes entering or exiting the cyl. sealed off and there are no reed valves in the exhaust or tranfer ports.It builds compression by the piston blocking all ports as it comes to Top Dead Center.
