mdopole
Hi guys. My first banshee build. Built the engine myself and it runs good for about 10 to 15 minutes and then cuts out/sputters up top and seems to lose some power. I'm stumped on this one. List of mods: ported cylinders bores .20 over. about 3 or so hours ride time on them new RM stator 32mm flatslides with 230 main jets pro circuit pipes new packing cleaned petcock and ran new 5\16 fuel hose carbs synced with tool new boyesen power reeds(the 2 stage reeds) stock gearing stock head +4 timing does it with stock timing too. Still has the stock water pump and running 50\50 prestone mix. It dosent seem to be using that much coolant. I mean I check the radiator cap and its been just a tad low before nothing major though. I usually ride it on tight trails and never get past 4th gear. About 85-95 outside temperatures. Its a 99 model. -thanks Matt
mdopole
Looking at some stuff I noticed I dont have a coolant tank. Im just running the small hose at the fill neck of the radiator out the back of the swingarm. Not sure if this messes up the coolant flow pattern or not. dirtydownunder
230's is very very lean. are you running pods or airbox with or without lid ? with lid and airbox youd wanna start at around 320's and work your way down and with pods or open box, start at around 340 mains and work your way down. rm stators are known for giving problems, do you have a stock one you can try ?. some people dont run coolant expansion tanks, as long as it goes from the filler neck to the ground its ok. banshee67
if it revs crisp and runs fine then it cant be the jetting. if it was too lean it would run lean from start. wouldnt it? i am thinking it has to be something other than jets. 230 seams low though. dirtydownunder
yeh 230 is way low, bump them up as i said in my first post. ignition systems (stators, pickups, cdi's and module's ) can get hot and stop working after some run time. check all of them for resistance when working, then when it gets hot and stops working check everything again. there is a web page that has all the banshee wiring and resistance value's but i forgot what the url is !, some one here will remember what page im talking about. mdopole
ok i got it fixed guys. It was the pickup gap on the flywheel. When I put the new stator on I didnt set the gap. It was double what it was supposed to be. .017. Its like a whole new quad now. lol Runs smoother and more crisp throttle control and more power. Might actually take it out riding now and leave the 450 at home. Thanks for you help guys. Edited July 3, 2010 by mdopole

AKheathen
man, are you sure they are 230's mabey 330's? that is definately lean size, especially for pro-circuits. possibly the missfire was the only thing saving you from overreving the lean motor long enough to melt the pistons. another thing could be the floats are too high, dumping too much fuel. it will not spill out and let you know, like stock carbs do. really pluged filter, would overricen it, too. first 2 things the symptoms described pointed to were too rich, and poor ignition. if it pulls strong, and not zinggy in all gears up to wot, then do a proper plug chop right away, before possibly doing damage.
