bonbon Posted June 23, 2010 Report Share Posted June 23, 2010 I put it in this spring. It worked great for the first ride or two, but now is acting weird. It shifts up like a dream but shifting down can be tough, and if I try to backload it, it will for a bit but then will slip between gears and you can hear the dogs ratcheting. Same thing if I stop on top of a dune then coast down, and pop the clutch to start it again. It just acts like it is between gears. Any input is good. first thing you never want to start a bike witha duneable by rolling it and popping the clutch while in gear. sounds like you need to check your forks and see if your teeth are ground down. sometimes mine wont down shift the easiest but its like 1 in 100 times. Why not the guys that cut a dunable over ride sware up and down you can back load it like a normal transmission. Mirical seasons of Flat track racing with numerous back loading and no damage. I look at a duneable as being just as sensitave as a regular over ride, only if you forget to grab the clutch at the end of a pass it wont gernade right away. You get a little lee way or forgivness. I wouldn't get one and plan on trail riding on it / back loading it on purpose. My stock transmission doesn't sound bad when I push or roll start it. I dont role it in neutral and drop it in gear. AKheathen Posted June 23, 2010 Report Share Posted June 23, 2010 i'm not gonna get in the arguement on being able to backload a duneable, or how much and how/when, but the symptoms describe exactly what has happened. bent shift fork, and/or rounded dogs. it could have been backloading, or simple shifting problem, such as up or downshifting with too much pressure, which happens in any trans, even stock, especially, if you accededntally lean foreward/back on the shifter. I'm just a little confused that it will shift up like a dream and no hiccups but basically won't backload at all, just grind. I'll probably just put the stocker back in and trash this damned thing. If the dogs are severely jacked up then I'll probably put my stocker back in. I have the complete stock tranny (drum, shafts, gears, forks) so I would just put it all in. I have always heard not to run the modded shift star with overrides as well, but I have 1 or 2 that I bought like that and they work fine so far.
