WTF Happen to my 4poke

Recommended Posts

What's up fellas, i know it's a 4 stroke but i need your feedback. I recently bought a KFX400 and i noticed this thing would drink up a lot of coolant so i knew then that was a red flag. Now i thought it may have been a water pump seal or something because when i changed the oil i knew that shit had mixed with water by looking at it. I knew it couldnt have been a head gasket or anything because this ran fine and no smoke of any kind through the exhaust. So here is the pic of what i found when i took her apart. I saw the hole where the water pump goes to was all corroded and my clutch cover had a hole to where the water was escaping into the crankcase. Now i have a simple question, could the jackass previous owner used battery acid as coolant causing this shit to corrode? lol. But really though i want to know if anyone has had this issue before to where this shit corroded. Any insight i would appreciate. Thank guys.

It is called electrolysis, that what happens when you don't use good coolant and run straight water for to long in a aluminum engine(PH LEVEL).Or if you have bad electrical grounds electricity will ground through the cooling system and cause this. You can check for the bad grounds by putting a volt meter in the water in the rad and ground the other lead and see if you read any voltage(engine running)

What year is it. Some of the early LTZ400's and KFX 400's had problems with the Magniesium Clutch cover. I think Suzuki might have issued a recall and replaced it with an aluminum cover.

Yep if I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure the 05 and 06 model had that issue with the cover and this would happen if you ran normal automotive antifreeze on these engines... You have to run antifreeze that's atv specific like coolanol and the like...

UPDATE

Yeah you guys were right, there was a recall on these clutch covers for the kfx400-LTZ400. I called the dealer and they told me the Magnesium clutch covers they had on these quads were reacting to the coolant they were using causing them to corrode like that. So im going to be taking my KFX to the dealer so they can flush out my oil, water, and replace the cover free of charge. Awesome for recalls huh, lol. Thanks for eveyones feedback, helped me out a lot !
