transmission binding without gears in

Ok, like the title says, I put my shift drum and forks in and when I try and go through shifting even without the gears in it binds, bad forks, drum, or what.

With the halves together and the gears in place I tried turning the motor like its in motion since its a constant mesh transmission as you all know, still didn't work. I'm stuck and need a bit of help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Do you have the right forks in the right place?

Theres a diff.

Anything look bent?

Spin properly when you first split it?

pull the forks and shafts and see if they move freely oiled......they should pretty much "flop" around the shafts if you just tilt it and let them slide. and, while they are out, move the shift drum around installed. x2 on making sure the forks are on right. if you mix them up, the drum will try to move a fork further than it wants to go, since there is different offsets

Yeah, forks are in the right place, I followed the clymer manual to the t.

I never did spin it before I split it, I got it with a bad crank and never spun it or checked shifting, the engine was out of the frame when I got it. I really should have checked the shifting, but kind of tore into it and forgot too :(

Sequential trans must have load and rotation to shift. You need to not only rotate, but sometimes torque the shafts in opposite directions and you will hear the trans pop into a gear. I suspect everything is fine but you need to study up on how to bench shift one. Basically, if it will find the gear with some twisting, it is fine. You will likely know if something is not right. They will hit a hard stop or will never free up.

i agree. trying to shift it on the bench is tough to do. there isnt much to these trannys so if you followed the clymers to a T, im sure youre fine.

I know the cylmers says to do the bench shifting to make sure everything is installed correctly but like everyone says, it's impossible to shift without a load. I was worried but knew I followed the clymers to the t and went ahead and installed everything and she shifted fine when I was done putting her back together.

make sure the second gear bushing hasnt slid out towards the case on the left side. if so it will be hard to push out of gear. it happens all the time and makes it hard to turn gears without motor running. if its not centerred in gear need to recenter it and there arew other tricks to stop it but ul need to do some machine work and get a washer for it.

The drum spins perfectly without the forks installed.

I think I am going to put the motor in the frame, hook the chain up to it, jack the end up, spin the tires and see how it shifts then.

If it still shifts like crap, Ill split the motor again and see if anything is up. I don't want this thing dying on the first ride, I want everything to work good.
