three piston rings

in order to build shee 4mm engine I received 5mm long rod 4mm stacker crank shaft from hot rods include 2 set of pistons size 66.5, I m confusing about the hot rod piston! it has tow grooves, and three piston rings of etch set and one of them is soft ! where is the soft ring will fit ? is it fit under the hard ring ? or it is for another model of ATV i m really don’t know there is no information written on the box of the cylinders.

Every Banshee piston I have seen only takes 2 rings. Is the soft ring an O ring? If it is then it might go on the crankshaft bearings. Some crankshafts use an O ring, instead of the factory style pins, to keep the bearing form spinning in the case.

no dear the soft ring not an o ring it is steel and I think it will fit under the second ring ,any how i will contct hot rod to make sure! one more thing guys any body know what is the clearanc i m the tolerance size in metric betwen the new piston and cylinder ! is it the same with yamaha recommend 0.060mm - 0.065mm or different size ?

I would say you have improper parts for your installation. "soft" rings are not used in a 2 stroke. I also do not know whether you are installing forged or casted pistons. Forged clearance will be .003" * 25.4 or .07mm. Casted clearance is usually about .002" * 25.4 or .051mm.

are you talking about a oil control ring possible? You will not use this on a banshee, and it does sound like you have impropper parts like brandon said!

Well guys i think it is vertex piston, I was thinking up and down measuring my new piston I found out the are the same height and depth of the new piston second ring groove is 4mm ,the thickness of the piston ring 2.5mm, thickness of the soft zigzag ring is 1.2 so( 2.5 + 1.5 =4MM) so due to above measutment logically the soft ring will be fixed under the second ring i think in order to reduce the het exchange between the piston and the ring and i decided i will try it.

Post a picture of that. Never seen such a thing.

 

Also, it is critical to transfer heat through the ring. This is the main outlet for heat from the piston crown.

Putting the "soft ring" behind the regular ring sounds like a good way to snag a ring in a port, but it is your money and you can put your bike together however you want. Just remember it cost more to fix it a second time than it does to do it right the first time even if you have to buy more parts now to get it right. At least if you bought different pistons now, you would not have to bore the cylinders again like you will if a ring snags. Do the pistons you have now have pins in the ring grooves to locate the ends of the rings so the ends don't get caught in the ports?

That zig zag ring your talking about is infact a oil control ring, you got some wrong parts.

Sounds like you certainly have a 4-stroke piston, or at least the rings. That zig-zag one thats a little bigger than the other two is an oil scraper, not for a banshee!

 

 

If you look at that link, the piston is indeed for a banshee but I have no idea why someone added that extra ring. I am just not a fan. I can see no advantage, regardless of claims.

Ya i am also curious seeings how there is no oil sump on a banshee, and the only protection you crank sees is prelube, i would think that extra ring may inhibit some of the 2 cycle from gettting to the lower end, but im only speculating. The coated skirts are kinda nice though.
