Some questions for the dune ridders

Recommended Posts

I have never been out West and I am curious about the sand dunes. I mean are the dunes regulated by the state and police? Do you just show up and ride freely or do you need permits? In what states are most of the dunes in, how many miles of dunes are there and how far can you go? Not trying to sound like a dweeb, but I would love someday to just go out and ride wide open in the dunes without having to worry about getting chased or arrested for ridding in the woods. It looks like such a good time, some of the pictures just look so awesome.

When I was a kid growing up, places to ride were never an issue, you just went out and rode, but due to major construction and the state cracking down on ATV's it is damn near impossible to ride, not to mention the locals, all they do is whine. It is almost to the point that there is no place left locally to ride, but when that time comes I will just store my bikes till I move somewhere that you can ride freely, cause I am never selling my Banshee!!

I would say Glamis is the best place to ride... period. The dunes at Glamis are PATROLLED by three different agencies, but REGULATED by one. Patrolling and regulating the dunes the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). The other law enforcement agencies present are Imperial County Sherriff, and recently we have seen Sheriff's vehicles from Arizona. You need a permit. I forgot how much I paid for my season pass, but I think it was $95.00. EVERY vehicle MUST have a permit. Trucks/trailers only need one permit. You can buy week permits for $35, I believe. (I've only ever bought season passes, since I'm only two and a half hours from Glamis) You can go here and see all the closures that have happened over the years from the damn hippies. All the gray area is sand. We can only ride in the small area in the middle down south to Gordon's Well. It is still the largest area of open sand dunes in the US. Glamis gets pretty crazy on Holiday weekends. If you're not stupid and you follow the rules, you won't have ANY issues. The #1 reason people get stopped is for not having a whip. Glamis is definitely something everyone needs to experience at least once..

Matt, I would respectfully disagree. I have lived very close to a lot of different dunes In my life (Glamis, Little Sahara UT, Coral pink UT, St. Anthony Id) and have spent much time at all, and I am here to tell you that St. Anthony is the king of them all. Nothing is steeper or taller than st. Anthony, only LS UT is close. The views are great with the Grand Tetons to the east, and all the lush green farm land spread out for miles. The dunes are not very busy, and because of that there is not a strong law enforcement presence.

There are other reasons too, but you should come see for you're self.

I used to want to go to Glamis pretty bad. But all i ever hear about it anymore is the wind is crazy and there usually just a bunch of drunkin idiots out there. I mean if you watch any of the quicksand vids there all of glamis. Ya there all from the big weekends but I personally have grown way out of the crazy party all day and night lets get on our bikes and kill someone or ourselves. Ive seen it happen and its not pretty and something i hope to never see again. Glamis has earned that rep though.

I for one stick to the Oregon dunes. Winchester bay is my favorite and there are many dunes on the Oregon coast. There all patrolled but if your not being stupid and out just having a good time, you will be fine. Have your whip. your db's under 96 i think and your $10 permit your good to go. Just my .02 :headbang: Get out and ride!!!

All I can tell you is that I've never been to anywhere than Glamis, Buttercup,, and Gordon's Well and honestly, the videos you've seen portraying it to be crazy drunken loons is far from the reality 99.9% experience. Datona Beach looked like the place to be to party and make a ruckus, but I went there and it was like a ghost town. The locals told me that it only rocked during Spring Break and even then, mostly when the cameras were rolling.

Maybe it's because I hang on Gecko Rd, but it's been ultra family friendly every time I've been out there. I've been out for all the big weekends this year, except easter...I'm heading out for 5 days the week after.

Some people are looking for their 15 minutes of fame.....

I live in Oregon and ride the Oregon Dunes alot, and love them. Here in Oregon you have to have a tag on your bike that is issued by the Oregon Parks Dept. and is sold by many retailers, mostly bike shops, but some other places in the towns by the dunes. Starting last year, Oregon is also requiring an Operators permit for the rider also, it is gradually being phased in by age, this year everybody under the age of 30 is required to have it, next year it will be everybody under the age of 40 and so on. In Oregon, youare required to have these items, unless your state has a similar program and reciprocates with Oregon, then the tags and permits from your state are OK. In Oregon there are noise laws, we have a speed limit on the beach and there are some other regulations. Sometimes they set up sound checks out in the dunes and you have to be checked to pass, usually we just go another direction when we see them so we are not hassled, even though our bikes are legal. The dunes are patrolled by Forest Service Law Enforcement and 3 different county sherriffs, depending on what area you are in. But, if you bike is not unreasonably loud, you have the tag visible and you obey the speed limits on the beach and access trails they will usually leave you alone. Out in the dunes there is no speed limit.

In 2008, we went to St. Anthonys, Idaho and did not have to get any permits as our Oregon ones were OK. The sand there was awesome and the hills were huge and steep, we loved it. We were camped next to a family from SoCal and went for a ride in their sandcar and had a blast. They said that the St Anthonys dune had bigger, steeper hills than Glamis, but Glamis was a bigger area and was a totally different expierence. Someday, I will get to make my trip to Glamis and check it out myself. As far as I know, all sand dunes riding areas require a flag. For more dune info, you can go to DuneGuide.com, it has info on all dune areas in the USA and more. It will tell you how to get there, what the regulations are and so forth.

Thanks for the post guys, it must be great to have somewhere to ride, you guys are all pretty lucky. The noise laws suck!!. What are the tickets for loud pipes? They don't have that law here yet, but I see it coming someday for the Harley's. I have Vance & Hines longshots on my Harley and they are not coming off!! I will pay the fine!!! I think next year I am going to RV out and bring the toys and most likely go to Glamis. I would like to visit the SoCal, Arizona region.

How is the riding in Saskatchewan, Canada? I sure you guys have allot of open land to ride? I met allot of Canadians this winter down at a resort in Akumal, Mexico. Allot of guys said that they have great ridding. We also laughed that we had 5 feet of snow and they had nothing  We usually get a couple of inches of snow a year and this year we definitely topped 5 feet. March hit and we have been in the 60's and 70's since, Bring it on!! Crazy weather for sure..

i have been to a few different and i have never seen anything near as great as st. anthonys, just as far as the riding goes. others may have better atmospheres but if you like huge, very steep and skilled dunes, st. anthonys is the place. no permit requied and there has been times where i didnt even see dune police. just ride with a whip and hold on going up choke. but dont get me wrong glamis is a blast and so is the oregon coast. i would like to try ls utah this summer too

I have to agree with all of it, except the "better atmospheres" part I don't understand. What do you mean? You will love LS UT, it is my second favorite place.

Glamis is a must. Went for presidents weekend this year. We went through almost 20 gallons of gas apeice. But if you are coming to cali, you should put dumont on your list as well. Its not the biggest place, but the dunes are tall and fun as hell. Its only packed on holiday weekends. Make sure you post if you are planning a trip out this way.
