SheezFast02
I just went out and bought some ATF Type F and wanted to ask you guys for your input before I go ahead and do this oil change. This will be my first time using ATF in a 2 stroke bottom end so I am a little leary on what brands to use and so on. I ended up leaving the store with Shell ATF Type F because they don't carry Klotz or BelRay,which would've been my preference.. So is Shell brand fine for use in our machines? The guy who runs the store has always been pretty knowledgeable and he says all Type F is pretty much the same thing inside the bottle. Any input would be appreciated. FrankieSquid
I always look for something that's suitable for wet clutch but most of ATF are suitable for that. I don't go too expensive on the ATF i usually change it out within everyother ride.
SheezFast02
Thanks, guys. Oil change is done as well as a freshly cleaned UNI and some new plugs. Old owner was running BR9ES but I switched back to BR8ES. Gotta get me some pipes and jetting now as well as a good carb cleanup.
White97Banshee
I use the super tech atf-f.. i'm pretty sure it's a walmart brand and it's only like $2.50 per quart. I just change it after every trip to the dunes but that's 3-4 days of nonstop riding hard so less often if you ride trails for a day at a time. J-Madd
I think all ATF Type F is about the same as far as what it does for your tranny. I've ran generic brands that I'v never heard of.
trail rider
ive used costal and supertech atf type f. to me, the coastal brand looks a hair thicker than the supertech. ive also used some supertech Dex-merc oil and didnt see any difference between it and the type f. bansheesandrider
First off, Klotz and Belray do not make ATF type F. Second all ATF type F is pretty much the same as the standard is the type f part, so if it is type f it is the same. Dexron/Mercon ATF is a different oil, you can't tell the difference by looking at it, but the friction modifiers in the oil are different to match the different composition frictions that GM used in their trannys. Type F was for the old style C4 and C6 trannys that Ford used to use and they had a different composition friction plate than what GM used, hence the F was for Ford. Current Fords use frictions similar to GM and therefore use Mercon ATF- Ford could not call it Dexron as GM has that copyrighted, but it is the same spec. SheezFast02
When I mentioned BelRay and Klotz I was referring to 80w, I guess I wasn't very clear on that. Thanks for all your input, guys. It's much appreciated.
Banshee SE
then the ATF oil is better than the Yamaha manual recommended motor oil 10w-30?? I just put 10w-30 in my Banshee, what you think guys, change the 10w-30 oil or can I use it without any problem?? I used mobil1.

If not it will make your clutch slip. I like ATF, but other oils will work if it is designed for a wet clutch.
GrMeyer
I went from gear oil to motor oil to what I fun know which is atf. Have been running it for three years and no probs. The oil u put in will be fine as long as it doesn't have any none friction adders. I also just use the cheapest atf I can find due to changing it after every other dunes trip depending on how hard I ride it.
James-26
So we are talking about ATF car transmission fluid correct? I also read something about mixing it with 10w 30?
camatv
why would you mix an engine oil with a transmission oil? what you basically have in a banshee is a closed transmission with a highly slipped wet clutch and a manual transmission. if you change it a LOT the atf works ok i usually burn it up within a day or so of hard high heat dune riding. as soon as it changes color change it! the 10-30 4T castrol motorcycle/ atv specific oils i feel are a lil better as far as longevity and seem to work well with clutch heat. also should be available at any parts store that carries castrol ( oreilly's, auto zone) if you don see it ASK for it or even special order it. my local reilly's stocks it for me and it runs about 3.50 - 3.99 a qt. but lasts a lot longer than the 2.50 atf.. i have ran the atf in my bigger bikes but have since switched back to the 10/30,40 castrol.. some gear oils are comapable with wet clutch but i cannot rember which ones.
