whats good gearing for trail riding

Recommended Posts

I think I have 22'' spidertracs rear and I am now trying a 14t front and a 46t rear it seems to work well I was worried when I hear a 12t front was bad so I went and bought a 14t Now I know I'm geared low but I am alot bigger than the average rider, but one question is the lower you go on the front sprocket more strain on the motor? because I thought I was doing a favor making the motor work less with lower gearing due to my weight? am I hurting it?

wow, i would've jumped to a 13/42 instead. a smaller sprocket on the front does put less force on the motor. i was just saying to try out the 13 before dropping in the rear also. rider weight was also one thing i was considering. well, at least you will have less strain on the chain now.

well I already had the 46t in the rear so I just got rid of the front and switched to a 14t... to gear a little higher, I thought it would be easier to shorten a chain than lengthen it. so I am geared a little higher from a 12t-46t to a 14t-46t so I'll see how it works but I do see myself going to a 43t or 44t later. thanks guys

im surprised no one has mentioned the gearing calculater.... .....I dont know the direct link to it but its on here somewhere.

BigMatt, do you run a rear skid plate? cause a 46t sprocket is pretty good size from the stock 41, and a skidplate probably wouldnt even bolt up. if you got alot of rutted out trails with any rocks anr stuff like that it could put a whoopin of your chain sprocket with it hangin that low. but if not then you dont have to worry about it.

and just for reference, 3 teeth in the back equal 1 in the front.

the stock rear skid does clear it but thats the lowiest you could go, I am rate now modding a aftermarket skid because I dont think the stock one has much crushing room if you smack something, if I understand you right your saying that there is a greater diference if you change the front sprocket oppose to the rear, because the one front tooth is equal to 3 on the rear, Thanks for all the info bro/

well, actually 2 things- the calculator is still pinned with the rest of the tech threads at the top of the section, just in the single pinned topic where they all are, so it doesn't take up half the page. and 1 tooth in the front is about 3.2-3.6 teeth in the rear, depending on how many total teeth.

so is 14t-46t to high or to low you think?

probably pretty close actually........just run it for a while and see what you think

so Ran it in the trails today and hard... i really like it I thing there is lots of low end and I'm not shifting to much, I out beat my buddys 450 on some of the up hill shots but i'm also alittle more daring than him.
