themuffinman
I bought a motor to replace the blown one in my bike and I was replacing the head studs since a few were bent and in the process a few of the threads came out of my cylinders. coils were around the studs when they came out. Does anyone know what to do? I don't know what these spring looking coils are but if anyone can shoot some knowledge my way I'd appreciate it. I can take some pics if no one can picture what I'm taking about. Thanks.

They are not that hard to put in if you have the kit, but you can screw it up if you don't do it right.

bansheesandrider
buy new cylinders!! Why? Just install HeliCoils in your cylinders, they will then be better than original and it will only cost less than 50 bucks if you use genuine Heli Coils, and if you use another brand it will be even less. How much would a shop charge me to get the helis put in? I'm sure I could do it but for the piece of mind and someone to blame when the f**k it up is nice
blowit
I would say if you only lost a couple threads, you may be just fine to use as is. Run your studs in and bolt a head up and torque it and see where you are. If they pull out, there is an issue. Usually, there is 25-25 threads in there which is more than enough to handle the axial forces in question. OTOH, I have done plenty of Helis. Making parts right now that require 1200 of them! I would recommend a DIY project. Nice to have on hand in a pinch and know how to use them.
papa_smurf49319
buy new cylinders!! I hope your joking. Right? Helicoils are stronger than the orignal threaded part.
HOLY SHEE-IT
helicoils are pretty easy....just make sure that when you drill and retap the hole that the metal chips don't fall into the engine. best to use a tapping block to get the threads straight. Those "spring looking coils" are probably heli-coils themselves that unscrewed with your studs. Post some pics and someone will confirm. If that is the case, all you need to do is get that size heli-coil and screw it back in. Piece a cake.
