klever209
I have had my banshee for three years now and have not done a top end on it. Since I have a fat tax refund coming I want to throw in about $1,500 into the motor. I do 80% sand riding with occasional line ups (at glamis, pismo and hopefully oregon this year) and 20 % tight trails and dirt hill climbs around local parks. I've talked to Kevin at HJR about a 4 mil but he recommends a mx port with the build...? I would like other people's opinions. Would a dune port not be manageable in trail riding? Also, how much will a mx port hold me back on an occasional drag race going up Oldsmobile Hill in Glamis? Does anyone have dyno charts that they can send me to compare power curves and max power ratings for these set ups. I have the following upgrades: single K&N filter going to two stock carbs no airbox toomey manifold boost bottle v force reeds cool head full toomey t-5 exhaust barnett clutch with HD springs (ouch) pancake bearing and painted the original front bumper matte black for an additional 15 hp (j/k) i dont think previous owner did anything to the cylinders (like porting) Next weeks shopping list -adjustable timing plate -Hinson Billet basket with cut gears -and new LED light set up
J-Madd
I can't help you with the mx vs dune port dyno charts, but I see that your planning on buying a Hinson basket and straight cut gears?? That money can best be spent elsewhere. Buy a magnum billet basket, and just run the stock helical gears.

If you spoke w/Kevin and he recomended a mx/trail port than that is what he got out of your conversation w/him. Do you have more fun riding trails or running the hill and drag racing. That should make up your mind between the two.

As far as riding well I prefer the dunes hands down balls out running but they are a bit far for me (glamis 12 hour drive, pismo 4 hr drive) so I end up doing mostly dirt trail riding at Carnegie a local park run by the state of CA. Trails are two quad widths wide since they are two way and are very steep mostly for dirt bikes. I just cant get myself to ride anything but the shee. Racing is not typical at dirt park but almost always end up happening at Glamis and pismo on crazy holiday weekends. Anyone know where I can compare the two set ups? Kevin's a great guy and I dont question his recommendation just want more info/knowledge before I shell out the cash. How does it compare to a 4 poke quad? I can take on 450's on sand up hills neck to neck and ocassionally just beat them but some take me all the way. On the flats its more of a matter of getting the good launch though. Is it difficult to break apart the gear from basket. Last time i took it apart I noticed some play between the gear and basket. How long do you think I have to replace it? What will hapen if I continue to use it this way? Thanks in advance.
Bill
If you do mostly trail riding id go with the 4mil mx port, set up right you can get 65 to 70 hp out of it. I rock a 4mil woods port and I spank all over most 4 strokes. hell I let my friends that ride the 450s jump on mine for a rip and they come back wide eyed and shakin!LOL

Jeff @ F.A.S.T. has them in stock. A little play is common as the rubber/polyurethane cushions wear. A new basket will come with new cushions as well. There is a sticky at the top of the forum about changing the basket.
RadarRacing
If you ride woods and hillclimbs at all I would probably lean towards the mx port as well. Kevin is trying to keep as much torque as possible but let you have a nice gain up top that when dragracing would probably be a bit behind the dune port but wouldn't be annoying climbing hills. You'll gain a bunch and the T5s will work nice with either style of porting.

I am now more interested to know how much more the dune port would put out than a mx on a drag race up a sand dune......Because at the end of the day I want to get to the top faster than all my friends with bragging rights and a sleeper with a boost bottle :-)

More of a sleeper look yet SP
jbooker82
I have a FAST dune port and it is very trail ridable. My trails do have a few tight spots but it is very managable with my CPI's and PWK 33's. I guess I dont try to get 4 stroke bottom end out of a 2 stroke. The dune port just takes the banshee up a step.
GNR101
I have a build like jbooker82's (just a HJR dune port) i can trail ride mine also. oh.. and at WOT its flys!
jbooker82
Look at it this way. A 4mill gives you a greater midrange so you can go more agressive on the porting to gain more power on the top end with out giving up the midrange. Burt Reynolds
All i can recommend on this top is dont do a 4mil unless you do it all the way
