Banshee wont start

Got to thinking. If it is hard to start but starts easy when warm... I would check the compression. Also, if you dont have an air meter gauge. Then the carbs aren't synced right. I have tried the eye watching and then tried the carb window and they are were all off when I put the air meter gauge to them. I have also found that having them synced with the air gauge that i have gained my bottom end back. So when people say that a banshee doesnt have bottom end. It is BS. Then they dont have it tuned right. Hope this helps. But really look into the compression. If one side is off more then 5psi more then the other. It will be time for a rebuild-new rings. Depending on how hard I ride a year. Just a light hone and new rings will bring up the compression. But you have to make sure you check with the manufacturer guide for ring gap.

Compression is about 125 on both cylinders. Carbs are dead on with the sync. Im still thinkin its the pilots but I could be wrong. Is there anything else that could be wrong with this bike? Choke works - bike runs rich when I pull it out when running.

hey zr2 dont mean to steal ur thread but i am going through exactly the same thing. i think i found mine though. I pulled the carbs to make sure i had the right bowls and slides in the right carbs and found it. not 100 percent sure yet but 95 anyways. gonna wait for it to cool down and try again. mine had the float bowls swapped. they both have tubes in them which someone says they shouldnt, but one has a choke jet and one has a plug.

it would rev up when i pulled the choke but not really start acting rich, now it starts smoking like hell, and you can hold it wide open and it wont rev out with the choke on. all signs of significant enrichment. the jet looks like a little holley jet with notches for a screwdriver. found a old post on here that showed a little how the choke works and steered me towards that jet being choke up. but it actually wasnt even there.

you may check this. i dont know how the hell u could ever switch bowls but apparantly someone did at some point on mine. also one slide has two square notches in the top and one has one square notch. the slide with 2 notchs is for the choked carb.

Ya i went through EXACTLY what your talking about! When i got this shee about 2 months ago, the guy threw in an extra set of stock carbs. The bowls were not the right ones on the bike so I swapped them out. During the swap I figured I would compare the bowls that were on it to the other bowl. They were ALL diffrent. The bowls that had the pickup for the choke (had 2 of them) were even diffrent. One just had a pickup but the other had a hole at the bottom of the pickup tube. This is litterally drivin me crazy!!!

here is the one with the hole

the one without the hole

if anyone knows anything about this please chime in!!

the one with the hole in the bottom is the one with the jet in it for the choke. that hole is a pickup for the fuel to go into the well. so it needs to go on the carb with the actual choke knob. i just went out and checked mine and it started literally 1st kick after sitting all night. huge relief. look straight down in those deep holes and the bigger one will have that jet in the bottom. shoot some carb cleaner or air through it to make sure it isnt choked once you find what im talking about. if those are swapped it bascially makes ur choke have no fuel supply so when u open it it just adds a little air and no fuel.

hope u get it. it fixed mine and im stoked cuz it was driving me nuts before.

ok, got 27.5 pilots and it STILL wont start. im getting gas, spark, and compression. i really dont know what the hell is wrong with this thing. choke works. 99% sure its not electrical - getting spark. i am not running a key switch and im pretty sure its not the problem. carbs are sync'd to the best of my abbility. it does seem to be snappier from no throttle to wot. the only way that i can get it to start is with my ketchup bottle still lol. any other thoughts on what could be wrong???

Its very common that people pull the bowls off the carbs and switch them. On some years, the carb bowls only have on side that has a brass tube from the bottom of the bowl which is for the choke. Make sure the left carb bowl has that tube in the bottom.. You can also blow air through it to make sure its not dirty...

I think mine is a .5. Didint have any luck starting. Last week it started and I started to tune it the best I could. Gave it a brap on the throttle, heard a clunk, and it died. Tore the cylinders off and they were fine but the piston/cylinder gap was .020. Thats why it was hard starting.

As for why the engine stopped (It wasnt my top end btw...) it was one of the screws for the pickup in my flywheel housing. Came out and lodged itsself between my flywheel and flywheel cover....no damage done but pissed that I didnt look at it before I tore my engine down! banghead.gif
