Looking at a 98 banshee tomorrow what to look for

I have always owned 4 strokes and I have recently bought a utility quad for work around the farm, so now i am going to look at a 98 banshee tomorrow. The guy says it is going to need a rebuild soon and needs swingarm bearings. He is asking $1000. He also said the carbs need cleaned but it will start and run. My question is what should i look for and how much am i looking for a rebuild? It has stock pipes on it and i would like to put some pipes on it and that is about all performance wise. I will be mostly trail riding and just screwing around, my brother has a z400 and one of my friends has a trx450r, it is just no fun riding with these guys on a utility quad.

Thanks,

Chris

well it sounds like you already know the bad about it,so just look for the good now, make sure the frame aint bent, boke, cracked or been repaired, check that the handlebars are straight if they are the stem is probly ok. check the front end out, try to wiggle the wheels around to check the wheelbearings, tierods, etc. does it have papers?the bad swingarm bearings arent that big of a deal, they are cheap and easy to fix, but also check the carrier bearings. the carbs are easy to clean, if ya do get it you should tear it down (do a compression test first) but if the compression is under 110 per side tear it down check the cylinders for wear and rebuild it now before it does blow up, most likely saving yourself money in the long run. if all checks out pretty good i dont think your getting hurt for 1000, shit i bought my 96 for 1100 it blew up the next day i put about 800 into it and got a sweet banshee for around 2000. good luck with it, post some pics if ya get it

What is the average cost to rebuild? I am really excited and hope it works out b/c i have never owned a 2 stroke and they seem kinda cool. What is the best "first mod" to do?

It has the ugly purple plastics but oh well they will do for now.

the cost is gonna depend on if it needs to be bored out or not, if not a piston kit is pretty cheap,1-200, as far as a first mod i'd look into a cool head and a set of pipes but if you've never owned a 2 stroke you will be impressed with the stock banshee. before you go worrying about mods you should definitly fix all the bad bearings, get it running good and get the chassis straight and tight then start your mods, but ill tell ya in advance once you start doing mods you wont stop! welcome to your new addiction

Might check the case above the sprocket to make sure it hasn't came off and broke it. They tend to leak from the little plastic cover under the sprocket too. If you are just going with pipes do something with the airbox too. If it still has the stock type filter put a Pro Design type plate in it so you don't have to worry about sealing issues and sucking dirt. Make sure you jet it for the pipes too. These things are lot pickier about jetting than 4pokes. It'll run like crap and blow up. I've alway been preached to about doing a leak down test to make sure it doesn't have any air leaks. I never have but it's cheap insurance. Make sure and pick a oil/mixing ratio before you do the jetting and use a good quality oil. Good luck.

How hard is it to clean carbs? I can count all the crap on craiglist that runs just needs "carbs cleaned"

i just picked up a 97 shee that needed the carbs cleaned and i had never done it before. i downloaded the service manual, completely disassembled both carbs, cleaned them with carb cleaner and a needle to get into the pilot jets and it worked perfect. i leared the hard way to install the throttle valve so the 1/2 moon faces the intake opening. other than that its very straight forward. i can get you the link to download the service manual if you need it let me know. that's a good price for a 98, i paid $1000 for my 97 but it had fresh top end, pipes & some other stuff.
