cool heads. 1 piece or 2 piece design?

just wondered if there was a significant difference in the noss/modquad one piece design compared to pro designs 2 piece cool heads? i have looked over the forum quite a few times trying to see if there was any real difference. other than the noss you can use the stock studs. seems like alot of guys on here run noss. would just like some honest opinions. thanks. i can get a new pro design complete kit off ebay for 231 shipped.

 

i would most likely get the 20cc heads so i can keep running 91 octane. i live in mechanicstown, oh and the elevation is about 1100. i have dune/trail port by rb racing in mich. cpi pipes, +4 degree key, ported reed cages by banshee boyz with boysen reeds.

I run a 2 piece a Vito's hemi head to be exact. I've never run a 1 piece but from what I've been told is that they are able to remove more metal form a 2 piece then a 1 piece and that means more flow. The 1 piece just has a few less o rings, I think thats the only benefit besides being able using your stock studs

Im gonna weigh in on it. I just had to remove the studs from a cylinder and I have to say that is a pain in the ass and would make it not worth the 2 piece ever. The pro design are well built but I would run the noss or any other one piece head before I remove the studs again.

my set of cylinders i just picked up that are dune/trail ported didnt come with studs. so thats another reason i was leaning towards pro design since they come with them, so i dont have to remove the studs out of my stock cylinders.

So what happens when you need to bore for a rebuild? You have to take the studs out when you do that.

 

 

 

The I haven't ever ran a 1 piece head. Dave Noss ( Noss Machine) makes some nice stuff. He is a good guy in general. If you end up getting a noss head, you can order one from FAST, HJR, or Wild Card. They buy heads from Noss and have them engraved with their company logo. Or you can buy it directly from Noss Machine. Noss heads run the standard pro design dome. He makes all kinds of domes to suit your needs as well.

 

I run a Pro Design 2 piece head. I like the 2 piece head because it makes for an easier installation. Grease up all the o rings with some Vaseline, or petroleum jelly. Then put the o ring on the dome. Then set the dome over the cylinder bore. Do the same for the other one. Then put the o rings on the base. Take the elbow off the back of the base. Slide the base over the studs and domes. Then install the top cover and torque down. Then put the elbow in the hose and bolt it back on the head.

 

The 2 piece allows you to easily line up the domes as your sliding the shell on. That way you don't have to try to put the domes in the head and slide the whole assembly on at once. Trying to keep orings from falling out.

I've only ran a Pro Design 2 piece. The studs were a piece of cake to replace. Take two nuts, lock em down and remove the studs. I've also had my cylinders bored with the Pro Design studs in. Didn't have to remove them. I'm sure both setup's are great.

I made some prototype one-piece designs several years ago but stayed with the two piece head. It is more difficult and time consuming to produce but I was never pleased with my one-piece designs. I'm not slamming one-piece heads.

 

The oring question seems pretty minor to me, maybe a difference of one to two minutes of installation time. On the other hand, the two piece design allows you to visually insure that the domes are positioned correctly before the top piece is installed.

That is why I like my 2 pice pro design. I always though your (Noss Machine) heads were one piece. My banshee came with the PD head. If I buy one it would be a Noss Machine head, except it would have to have F.A.S.T. engraved on it.

same here, from pictures and not reading anything other wise, i always thought noss heads were one piece design. like the chariot cool heads. but thanks guys for the clarification and all the info.
