Dinner Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 If your CR's went into 3 cylinder high idle, you would notice Sounds like your engine is going to scatter all over the yard And it's Cummins, not Cummings Quote
yamaha04 Posted January 28, 2010 Author Report Posted January 28, 2010 If your CR's went into 3 cylinder high idle, you would notice Sounds like your engine is going to scatter all over the yard And it's Cummins, not Cummings yeah i cant remember the years when they used the 3 cylinder high idle . 3 cylinder high idle sounds not very good lol but does work i hear, i should of taken a video of our ford 6.0l starting at work without being plugged in. OMG it sounded like bolts in a paint can then put into a paint shaker . tell me they don't all sound like that. terrible injector knock Quote
Dinner Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Well cold starts are hard on a lot of engines. Tonight will be a good test for the old Cummins, dropping down to -13 but feel like -22. Synthetic is a huge improvement for cold climate engines. Take for instance using 15W-40 in cold climates. Once you get the engine started it only takes a few seconds for the (piece of crap) OEM gauge to read "Pressure" (on the 24 Valves, not sure if it's the same on the CR's...as in what the gauge is actually reading). However it takes a good 45 seconds for that cold oil to reach the valvetrain and start flowing properly. I cringe when I see guys start their Diesels and instantly drive away But then again it's not my engine. Hopefully 3 Cylinder High Idle will start up tomorrow and I can see how quick the engine warms up. Quote
rubberneck Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 that should be plenty cold to get it to go into 3 cyl dinner. I know it was right around 0F when mine did it. One thing is for sure, you will have no doubt when it does it. I though it sounded kind of cool. Quote
Dinner Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 Yeah it does sound neat, I should try to get a video of it, specially with my stack Except I'm going to do some tests though, cause so far I don't think it warms the engine up any quicker than just high idle... Quote
rubberneck Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 honestly cant speak for that, when mine did it i had the exhaust brake on also, and it put out over 700 (almost 800 if i remember) degrees preturbo with ebrake and high idle. It warmed up quick. That is one cool thing about it is it alows both, where if i flip my high idler on normally it will disengage the ebrake. Quote
Bansh-eman Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 Here is a response from another member on the truck forum: On a 3rd gen the following is pretty close to how the ECM treats idle.. ~32*F, and coolant temp is below 160*F and the brake, throttle, gears aren't touched for 2 minutes the rpms will increase to 1000 rpms, until 160*F, brake, throttle, gears, etc are touched, selected. ~15*F, and coolant temp is below 180*F the truck instantly goes to 1000 rpms up startup, and will do it again if you don't touch, gas, brake, gears, etc and are stationary for 2 minutes, and the coolant drops below 180*F. DodgeDiesel2500 Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 lol i have a 97 2500 dodge lol 12v and when its just like 40 the truck idles at very low rpms. no high idle for me... Quote
