Frame # / Case #

I'm looking into buying a powder coated frame. It is painted over the frame numbers. I know the person who owns it and it is legit. My question is, when I put my motor in it, are the numbers on my cases enough? Can I use the case numbers for registration? What if it's not registered and I get stopped? I plan on getting a written bill of sale, even though there are no numbers to write down. I want the frame but only if it can be done without any question. Please, facts only, don't want to risk my bike on opinions! Thanks in advance for any info. you can provide.

pretty sure that you need the vin off the frame or they can impound the bike. I had to scrape the paint off mine once or they was going to take the bike.. if you get the vin though you can go get a new one from the dmv. at least thats the law here in utah.

Also, if I strip the paint off that area, do you think the numbers will still show up even if it was sand blasted prior to painting? Thanks.

Probably not. The VIN isn't stamped into the frame it is etched. And it is very very easy to remove with sandblasting/PC. The best bet is if you know the VIN # buy a set of punches and punch it back in. As long as the bike has a VIN and it isn't registered as stolen there isn't a ehck of a lot cops can do about it. If your on public land than you may also have to be registered/insured depending on the state's laws.

the older frames have the Vin stamped and they hold up well under sand blast and powder coat, but you might have to go back over the numbers with something to dig out the grooves

the newer frames that are etched are different.I put a piece of metal tape,(ductwork) so it just covers the numbers, the metal tape holds up well to sandblast and powdercoat.
