jstaguy24
I took the banshee out today. It was acting up the last time I was out and was worse this trip. It shifts ok from 1st to second or third gear. But I cannot get it into fourth gear under a load. If Im on the gas and accelerating I can lift on the lever over and over and it will not shift. Once I let off the gas and get the RPM's down so there is not load on the engine it will shift into fourth and up with no problems. But racing up the hill there it is impossible to get fourth gear. What should I look at first? Thanks David
locogato11283
sounds like youre just making enough power that its not shifting under a load. a modded shift star and shift shaft should help cure it a little to where you can get it to shift. i would also pull your clutch cover off and check to make sure that your shift shaft is centered on the shift star. the adjustment is the eccentric bolt that your shift shaft slides over when you insert it into the cases. FASTOYS
What loco said plus need to check your clutch lever adjustment and style of perch/lever (as some of them dont have enough throw). Alot of times, trouble shifting is actually clutch related. If your not sure what your doing give me a call when you have it apart and i will walk you through what to look for. jstaguy24
Lever and perch are all stock. I think my clutch may be getting wore as well. I dont know if it was ever changed when my friend whom I bought it from has ever changed the plates. I will have to get into it and look. Thanks for the info guys. Just needed to know where to start
jstaguy24
Where would be a good place to get the modded shift star and shaft? I think I might just take it apart and replace them and the clutch. Its time I believe

Just needed to know where to start You really need to not only inspect your clutch plates, but the basket and inner hub. Grooving of the basket and hub can cause the plates to stick and not move correctly thus does not unload the transmission correctly. If you do not unload the trans, it does not want to shift. Signs of clutch problems commonly show up creeping forward when the bike is running, in gear, and the clutch pulled or if engagement is rough or "all or nothing". Warped drive plates can also cause excessive drag. They can be inspected on a known flat plate and feeler gage for warping. As Jeff mentioned, shifting problems are often caused by the clutch.
